In a move aimed at restoring public confidence and upholding the sanctity of Ghana’s democratic process, President John Mahama has instructed the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to launch an immediate investigation into the tragic deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 and 2024 general elections. These incidents have left an indelible mark on the nation’s democratic process, demanding swift and transparent action. The government has committed to ensuring justice for the victims and their families, with proposed measures including the formation of a dedicated taskforce within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to focus solely on these cases.

Thorough interviews with eyewitnesses and victims’ families are also recommended to gather critical evidence. Furthermore, the government has called for a review of electoral security arrangements to identify lapses and responsibilities during the affected periods.

This directive is in line with President Mahama’s previous pledge to investigate election-related deaths and injuries, which he made during a courtesy meeting with representatives from the European Union (EU) in Ghana.

The President’s commitment to transparency and accountability is a welcome step towards healing the wounds of the past and rebuilding trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
