He also emphasized that marriage is sacred and should only be between a man and a woman.
“I believe in the principles and values that only two genders exist – man and woman. And that marriage is between a man and a woman,” President Mahama said, receiving nods of approval from the clergy in attendance.
President Mahama also revealed that he is currently in consultations with the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to reintroduce the Proper Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-LGBTQIA+ bill, in the 9th Parliament. The bill, which was first introduced in the 8th Parliament, did not receive assent from former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
President Mahama expressed his hope that the consultations will lead to a renewed version of the bill, which he believes should be championed by the government rather than being a private member’s motion.
