The National Peace Council, through its Deputy Director in Charge of Conflict Management and Resolution, Mr. Frank Wilson Bodza, has emphasized the crucial role journalists play in preventing conflicts before, during, and after the 2024 elections. Apexnewsgh reports
Speaking at a two-day training exercise for journalists in the Upper East region, Bodza stressed the importance of gathering information from all necessary angles to produce rich and balanced reports.
The training, organized by the Upper East Regional Peace Council in partnership with Catholic Relief Services under the Preventing Violent Extremism through Social Accountability (POVETSA) project II, aimed to enhance journalists’ capacity for conflict-sensitive reporting. This project is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Bodza noted that conflict-sensitive reporting is critical, especially during election years, as it helps prevent escalation and promotes peaceful elections. He highlighted the threat of violent extremism, particularly in border regions, and emphasized the need for journalists to sustain peace and promote social cohesion within communities.
Key Objectives of the Training:
(a) Engage the media in conflict prevention and peace promotion
(b) Build capacity for conflict-sensitive reporting
(c) Prevent misinformation and disinformation that can spark conflicts
(d) Promote peaceful elections and social cohesion
Mr. Bodza also touched on the dangers of hate speech and misinformation, which can spread quickly through traditional media and radio. He urged journalists to use their platforms to prevent disinformation and promote peaceful elections.
By empowering journalists with the skills and knowledge to report responsibly, the National Peace Council and its partners hope to contribute to a stable democracy and sustained peace in Ghana.
