Charles J. Owusu, a legal representative for the Board of Trustees, addressed the growing concerns regarding the governance and financial management of the initiative.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, Mr. Owusu clarified that the Board operates as a company limited by guarantee, making it independent of direct government control and not subject to unilateral dissolution by the state.
His comments come in response to recent allegations of financial mismanagement made by Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu. Mr. Owusu categorically dismissed these accusations, stressing that there has been no audit report indicating any wrongdoing by the Board or its members. “The National Cathedral is not a state institution.
It is legally registered as a company limited by guarantee, governed by its own regulations and structures,” he emphasized. “The government cannot dissolve the Board unless through a court order.”
Addressing the ongoing scrutiny, he defended the trustees—who represent prominent figures from Ghana’s major Christian denominations —and asserted that political motives have unfairly targeted them. “This is a spiritual and national project, and, unfortunately, it has become a political punching bag,” Mr. Owusu lamented, highlighting the challenges faced by the Board amidst the political landscape.
In a rallying call to the Christian community, he urged believers across the nation to unite behind the vision of the National Cathedral, implying that such support could diminish the need for government funding to complete the project. His appeal extended directly to former President John Dramani Mahama, as he urged him to either endorse the completion of the cathedral or grant the Board the autonomy to raise the necessary funds.
The National Cathedral project has been a point of contention in public discourse, eliciting mixed reactions regarding its financial implications, funding sources, and overall transparency. As the debate continues, Mr. Owusu’s remarks attempt to reassert the Board’s integrity and independence in the face of mounting pressure and scrutiny.
