The Registrar of Companies, Jemima Oware, has announced that her office will begin deleting inactive companies from the system, starting next month. Apexnewsgh reports
This move is aimed at cleaning up the register and ensuring that only active and compliant companies remain.
According to Madam Oware, many companies, some dating back to 1963, have failed to update their information and file their annual returns and financial statements. These companies, estimated to be over 300,000, are still using old certificates and have not bothered to obtain unique tax identification numbers for their directors.
Madam Oware noted that her office has automated the registration process since 2011, and about 7,000 companies have been registered so far. However, many more need to be registered, and the office is urging companies to regularize their status before the deadline.
To register a company, certain requirements must be met, including a unique name, objects or activities, a registered office and principal place of business, directors, a secretary, auditors, and a minimum of two directors and one shareholder. Additionally, companies must change their auditors every six years, as required by law.
The Registrar’s office is urging companies to take advantage of the deadline to regularize their status and avoid being deleted from the system. With the automation of the registration process, companies can easily search and verify their information electronically.
