The National Labour Commission (NLC) has declared the indefinite strike by staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA) as illegal and unwarranted. Apexnewsgh reports

On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, the NLC ordered the striking workers to call off their strike with immediate effect, citing a contravention of Section 161 of the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651).

The NLC found that the strike, which began on Monday, June 10, was declared while negotiations were ongoing, which is illegal. The commission directed the National Union of Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) of the TUC (Ghana), the mother union of the NIA Division of the PSWU, to ensure that striking staff return to work immediately.

The NLC also ordered the parties to return to negotiations, which are being chaired by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC). The parties are expected to report back to the NLC on July 3, 2024. Despite being summoned, the leadership of the NIA Division of the PSWU was absent at the hearing.

The Deputy General Secretary of the Public Sector Workers Union, John Sampa, representing the NIA workers, indicated that the strike would only be called off after meeting with their leadership for a final resolution.

He stated that they are willing to dialogue and negotiate in good faith, but want to see commitment from the government to treat NIA workers fairly, similar to workers in other institutions.

The next negotiations meeting is scheduled for Friday, June 14, 2024, at the NIA Headquarters.
