In a surprising turn of events in Ghana’s political scene, two prominent members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bolgatanga East District have made a significant move by defecting to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Apexnewsgh reports

Sampson Asinga, a two-time contestant in Assembly elections, and Godwin Adombila, a photographer and nephew of former Upper East Regional Minister Hon. Rockson Bukari, decided to switch sides, stating that they found a protective shield under the NDC umbrella.

The news of their defection sparked jubilation among NDC supporters in Bolgatanga East, especially during a rally organized by the incumbent Member of Parliament Hon. Dominic Ayine in Gambibgo. The event saw the presence of NDC national chairman Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and other national officials. Asinga and Adombila publicly renounced their NPP membership and were ceremoniously welcomed into the NDC, a move that symbolized their official transition.

This development sheds light on the ever-evolving nature of Ghanaian politics, where individuals seek new alliances and opportunities, leading to shifts in party loyalty. The NPP, a dominant force in Ghanaian politics since its founding in 1992, has seen notable leaders such as John Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo. However, this recent defection underscores the growing appeal of the NDC, particularly in the Upper East Region.

With the 2024 elections on the horizon, these shifts in allegiance could significantly impact the political landscape. The NDC, known for its center-left stance, has emerged as a formidable competitor to the NPP’s center-right ideology. With Asinga and Adombila’s defection, the NDC gains valuable insight into the NPP’s strategies and strengthens its presence in the Bolgatanga East District.

As Ghana gears up for the upcoming elections, this development highlights the dynamic nature of the country’s politics, where individual choices can wield substantial influence over the broader political landscape.
