The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region has taken decisive action against Sawuda Bilgumsey, the Second Vice Chairman of the Pusiga Constituency.
Faced with grave allegations of fraud exceeding GH₵1 million, Bilgumsey has been removed from his position and disqualified from holding any future party office until he pays back the full amount he is accused of swindling from party members.
According to the party’s Regional Disciplinary Committee, Bilgumsey allegedly duped nearly 100 individuals, promising them the chance of employment, particularly within the security services. His deceitful scheme reportedly netted him more than one million Ghana cedis, leaving many community members feeling betrayed and disillusioned.
Reflecting on this serious misconduct, Lawyer Anthony Namoo, the Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, spoke to A1 Radio monitored by Apexnewsgh about the damaging implications of Bilgumsey’s actions on the party’s reputation. “He used his position to deceive people. Even though he didn’t physically harm the party, his conduct under the guise of his office brought the name of the party into disrepute,” Namoo remarked, emphasizing the need for integrity within the party ranks.
This disciplinary action is part of a comprehensive crackdown targeting misconduct within the party, particularly in light of the upcoming 2024 general elections. The NPP’s regional leadership has sanctioned 16 other officials and members from both the Pusiga and Tempane constituencies for various infractions.
The investigations began on January 25, 2025, following numerous complaints of anti-party behavior. Disciplinary hearings were held from March 22 to 23 at the NPP Regional Secretariat in Bolgatanga. Among those facing punitive measures, Emmanuel Awinimi Atesiba, the Constituency Communications Officer, Jacob Akazusah, the Treasurer, and Musah Awudu, the First Vice Chairman, were all removed from their positions and banned from the party for five years.
Meanwhile, others such as Agbango Jonathan Akugri and Ayaaba Jacob Asaman received suspensions ranging from three to four years. Notably, Edward Atule Akwaka and Alhassan Abusang faced sanctions for their refusal to appear before the committee.
In a glimmer of hope amidst the turmoil, not all accused individuals were found guilty. Five members, including Salifu Ibn Adams, the Constituency Research and Elections Officer, and Haruna Salam, the Assistant Secretary, were fully exonerated of all allegations against them.
The NPP’s regional leadership has underscored that these decisions are critical for restoring discipline, maintaining integrity, and rebuilding public trust in the party as it gears up for future electoral challenges. As the dust settles, all eyes remain on the party’s efforts to heal and move forward from this scandal.
