During the recent State of the Nation address, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced a bold plan for Ghana to generate thirty percent of its electricity from nuclear energy by the year 2070.
This initiative is part of the country’s energy transition plan and is being overseen by the Ghana Nuclear Power Programme Organisation (GNPPO), which falls under the Office of the President.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of providing clean and affordable electricity to drive Ghana’s industrialization agenda. He also stated that the ultimate goal is to position Ghana as a net power exporter in the ECOWAS region through the West African Power Pool. This ambitious project aims to not only meet the country’s energy needs but also contribute to regional energy security and cooperation.
The president’s announcement follows Ghana’s participation in the US-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit and the International Framework for Nuclear Energy Co-operation (IFNEC) Ministerial Conference in November. These events highlighted Ghana’s commitment to nuclear energy as a key component of its future energy mix.
With this plan in place, Ghana is poised to become a leader in clean energy production in the region, setting the stage for sustainable development and economic growth for years to come.
