A dramatic scene unfolded in the parliamentary chamber on Monday, July 22, 2024, when Speaker Alban Bagbin directed the Marshal to escort Member of Parliament (MP) for Sefwi-Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, out of the chamber. Apexnewsgh reports
The incident occurred during a session where lawmakers were discussing the nomination of two justices to the Supreme Court by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Speaker Bagbin had urged the house to consider the full complement of the Supreme Court when the Appointments Committee presents its report on the nominees. However, Dr. Afriyie challenged the Speaker’s comment, asserting that it was not within the Speaker’s purview to make such a prejudicial statement.
Angered by the challenge, Speaker Bagbin immediately ordered the Marshal to remove Dr. Afriyie from the chamber, stating, “And I can send you out of the house now, it lies in my authority to do so. You represent the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso, I represent the whole country, please Marshal, take him out of the house, Marshal, take him out of the house….”
The Speaker’s directive was carried out, and Dr. Afriyie was escorted out of the chamber. This incident highlights the tensions that can arise in the parliamentary chamber, particularly when lawmakers disagree on matters of procedure and authority.
As the leader of the house, Speaker Bagbin has the authority to maintain order and enforce the rules of the chamber. However, the incident also raises questions about the limits of free speech and the role of MPs in holding the Speaker and the executive branch accountable.
