The Executive Secretary of the Upper East Regional Peace Council, Mr. Ali Anankpieng, has emphasized the importance of comprehensive and balanced reporting on conflict-related issues. Apexnewsgh report Speaking at a two-day training exercise for journalists in the region, Anankpieng stressed that reporters must gather information from all necessary angles to produce rich and balanced stories. “To write about conflict, you need to know all the factors involved, from economic, historical, social, and political perspectives. All must be analyzed to provide a clear understanding of the conflict,” Anankpieng explained. He highlighted the significance of understanding the history and context of conflicts, such as chieftaincy and land disputes. Anankpieng encouraged journalists to conduct thorough research, consult archives, and engage directly with affected communities to gain a deeper understanding of the issues. When asked about the role of journalists in resolving conflicts, Anankpieng emphasized that their contribution cannot be overstated. “Journalists report and inform the public, helping to combat ignorance that can escalate conflicts. By providing accurate and comprehensive information, journalists can empower the public to make informed comments and avoid inflammatory statements.” The training, organized by the Upper East Regional Peace Council in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) under the Preventing Violent Extremism through Social Accountability (POVETSA) project II, aimed to enhance journalists’ capacity for conflict-sensitive reporting. The project is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. By equipping journalists with the skills and knowledge to report responsibly, the Upper East Regional Peace Council and its partners hope to promote peaceful conflict resolution and prevent violence extremism in the region. A lot of Upper East Media platforms fear reporting regional conflict issues— Peace Council Secretary
The Upper East Regional Peace Council has revealed, that majority of the media outlets in the region do not report conflict ongoing issues in the region because they still has a lot to do as far as understanding conflict issues are concerned. “A lot of our media still has a lot to do as far as understanding conflict reporting and because of that, a lot of them are even afraid to report on the conflict”. According to Mr. Ali Anankpieng Executive Secretary Upper East Peace Council, “A lot is happening in Bawku, but we don’t know what is happening because the media are afraid to report because of fear of making mistakes. But you will avoid making mistakes if you address your mind to understanding what the context”. He stated Even though he acknowledged that not mouch reports are coming from the media operating in the region as far as conflict is concerned, he acknowledged that the media is playing their role but also insisted that their best is not enough. “So, as far as the media is concerned, you are doing your best but not enough is been done to bring the issues to the floor for all of us to understand to be able to resolve. What you are doing today is a step to making it work out for”.
