Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Ghana’s Vice-President, has said even though 70 per cent of the students that sat the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) were Nigerians, Ghanaians students got more 8As than their Nigerian counterparts. In his view, contrary to pessimistic views that the introduction of the Free Senior High School in Ghana would compromise quality education, the most recent WASSCE results released by the West African Examinations Council proves otherwise. Speaking at the closing session of the National Chief Imam’s annual Ramadan lectures (Tafsir) in Accra, Dr. Bawumia spoke about the government’s commitment to promote quality education, indicating that the remarkable record of the first batch of beneficiaries of Free SHS among four West African countries, proved that the government has not compromised quality education. “When the Akufo-Addo government introduced the Free SHS policy, some people opposed it and said quality education would be compromised”, he re-echoed. “But the 2020 West Africa Senior High School Examination shows that if anything, the free senior high school has improved the quality of education in Ghana.” “The WAEC with countries like Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Nigeria, Ghana; the results show that of the total number of students who took the exam, there was a total number of 465 who got A in all their 8 subjects”. “Of the 465 in all these countries, 411 came from Ghana”, he said. Dr Bawumia noted that “the other 54 came from Nigeria but Nigerian students were 70% of all the students who took the exams but Ghana got 411 8As and they [Nigeria] got 54 8As.” “That tells you the quality that we have produced. We should not underestimate what we are capable of and we should not underestimate what we are capable of.” “Free SHS is helping our students and of course helping our parents as well, because they don’t have to pay.” Dr Bawumia urged all, particularly members of the zongo community and other deprived communities to seize the equal opportunity and access to education that the Akufo-Addo government has provided. Akufo-Addo freezes his salary increment and that of Bawumia and all appointees of the Executive
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has placed an embargo on salary increment for himself, his Vice and all the appointees of the executive for this year as a way of contributing to the reduction of the effect of the virus on the local economy. Speaking at this year’s May Day celebration on Saturday May 1, Mr Akufo-Addo said “…In addition the first unemployment insurance scheme ceded by government is being championed by the social partnership council and it is to be established by year end. “We also use this year to ensure that all workers are vaccinated to protect their lives and enhance their productivity. I have taken the decision to freeze salary increment for this year, 2021 for myself as president, the vice president, ministers, deputy ministers and all appointees of the executive. “It is our modest contribution to reduce the damage to our public revenue and to help hasten our nation’s recovery from the ravages of the pandemic.” The Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Mr Yaw Baah revealed that 800,000 workers in Ghana suffered from pay cut as a result of the effect of the coronavirus on the local economy. He recounted the impact of the virus on workers during the May Day celebration on Saturday May 1 in Accra. Mr Baah said at the event that workers had had to endure enormous economic pressure following the pandemic. He said among other things that “800,000 workers were affected by pay reduction.” He further revealed that poor housing for workers and delay in negotiation of national minimum wage are among some of the concerns of workers that the president must deal with. No man can dim the light ahead of you – Anglican Bishop to Bawumia
The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Accra, Rt. Rev. Dr. Daniel S.M Torto, has prophesied an unquenchable bright future for the Vice-President of the Republic, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Addressing congregants at the Easter Sunday Service of the church on Sunday, April 4, 2021, Rt. Rev.Torto declared that “no man can dim” the light of the Vice President, and urged him to remain steadfast and work for God and man because he is on a worthy cause. “There is light ahead of you and only God can put that light off. No man and I mean no man can dim your light… Your kind is the kind of political leadership we want as a nation. Leadership that recognizes that respect for people irrespective of faith, religion or ethnicity in a manner that fosters national cohesion is what we desire and deserve as a people,” Rt. Rev Torto stated when Vice-President Bawumia, joined members of the Anglican faith in Easter Sunday worship. Alluding to Vice President Bawumia’s continuous engagement with the Christian community despite being a Muslim, Rt.Rev.Torto indicated that religious tolerance and acceptance are the hallmarks of a good leader. “Today, we are privileged to have in our midst the Vice-President of the republic, H.E Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Even more refreshing and noteworthy is the fact that he is a Muslim but chose to worship with us on the day of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. “I take pride to say that such a unique leader who believes in religious tolerance and acceptance is the number two gentleman of my country. “Mr Vice President, I do not intend to flatter you but I just say the whole world, the entirety of Ghana and the Christian community has taken a keen interest in your humility, respect for people and the diligence with which you approach your work. Your kind is the kind of political leadership we want as a nation. Leadership that recognizes that respect for people irrespective of faith, religion or ethnicity in a manner that fosters national cohesion is what we desire and deserve as a people.” He continued: “Good leadership is not about what FAITH one belongs to. It is not about whether one belongs to a minority tribe, ethnicity or faith. In fact, for us as Christians, the best gift God gave us did not come from a majority tribe or ethnic group. Neither did it come from the rich family. Otherwise, the Virgin Mary would not have been the one to give birth to Jesus. Mary and Joseph also came from minority and non-recognizable tribes and families and yet they gave birth to the saviour. “I know God brought you from your humble beginning to this point for a purpose. Be assured that his purpose for you in life on this earth is not yet done. Therefore do not be perturbed by the sayings of those who can only talk doom for your future. There is light ahead of you and only God and put that light off. No man and I mean no man can dim your light. We will continue to keep you in prayers and the Lord Jesus for whose resurrection you are celebrating with us today shall surely come to your rescue at the right time.” Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Let’s focus on Akufo-Addo’s transformation agenda – Bawumia to 2024 campaigners
The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, says he has not given consent to posters promoting him as the 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Some posters with the hash tag #Breaktheeight, have emerged on social media, pushing an agenda for Dr Bawumia to be considered as the next flagbearer of the NPP in 2024. But a statement dated March 24, 2021, signed and issued by Dr Gideon Baako, the Spokesperson to Dr Bawumia said “The Office of the Vice President has taken notice of the proliferation of posters around the country apparently promoting H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the candidate of the NPP for the 2024 elections. “For the record, the Vice President has not given his consent to these and other associated activities.” It added that Dr Bawumia remains focused on assisting President Nana Akufo-Addo in the execution of his agenda to transform Ghana. “This is where everybody’s focus should be,” it said. Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the party, Mr Freddie Blay, has urged members with ambition for various positions in the party, including the flagbearership “not to steal the start for they might be disqualified.” In an interview with the Daily Graphic, he said following the results of the 2020 General Elections, it was important for every member of the party to focus on supporting the President to execute his plans in his second term. He noted however that the party was not against members being ambitious, but “we should not be reckless and indecent” in a manner that would injure the internal cohesion and peace required to steer the state of affairs of the nation till 2024. Vice President Dr Bawumia (seated) and Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen
In 2024 Ghana will once again go to the polls to elect a new leader and one thing is certain in that contest, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will not be on the ballot paper. His two terms in office, as stipulated in the 1992 Constitution would be up and he will leave office having served for 8 years. As such, the New Patriotic Party (NPP)would have to elect a new candidate to square off with the candidate of their closest opponents, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Already, it appears the race as to who will lead the NPP in 2024 is a straight fight between Vice President Dr Mahammudu Bawumia and Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen. None has publicly stated their desire to lead the party but every student of politics knows they will be in the mix. The impending race for the NPP flagbearer has led to unproven speculations and allegations that all is not well between the two potentially leading candidates. That belief and suspicion was heightened last week when President Akufo-Addo ostensibly snubbed both Dr Bawumia and Alan Kyerematen when he was looking for someone to read the 2021 Budget in the absence of Finance Minister-Designate Ken Ofori Atta. Initial suggestions had leaned towards Alan Kyerematen, and then it shifted to Dr Bawumia. President Akufo-Addo eventually settled on Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to present the 2021 budget to the house on Friday, March 12. That decision it is believed was to avoid the situation where the one picked between the two would be seen as receiving the president’s endorsement way before the party goes to the polls to choose a leader to replace Nana Addo as leader of the NPP. However, during the budget reading on Friday, March 12, the two personalities (Dr Bawumia and Alan) were seen demonstrating great camaraderie. In a photo widely shared on Social Media, the Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen with one hand raised is seen slightly bending to greet Dr Bawumia who was seated on a sofa. Bawumia with his hands clasped reciprocates the gesture in a show of respect. Another photo at the same event captures the two in an engrossing conversation after they exchanged pleasantries. While the photos may to a certain degree douse the seeming or suspected tension it should not come as a surprise when things get heated, especially among supporters of these two when the time to elect a new leader of the party gets closer. Or perhaps, the duo could be the winning ticket for the NPP come 2024. The big question though will be who will lead and who will be running mate? Bawumia is NPP’s best bet for 2024 – Alan’s former aide
Chief Obosu Mohammed, a former press secretary of Alan Kyerematen, has argued that vice-president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is New Patriotic Party’s best bet for 2024. He is therefore calling on NPP supporters to give him their full support ahead of the presidential primaries. In an opinion piece to the media, he said: “Having gauged the pulse of the NPP members, sympathisers and the good people of Ghana, analysed the strengths and electoral records of the prospective candidates seeking to lead our great party and upon critical and reflective thinking, I am without a doubt that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has a towering advantage that can cement our victory in the 2024 general elections.” Below is the full article: Bawumia embodies our best shot in 2024 (I) The exigencies of our politics requires that electoral competitions are not a staged one-off event, however, it is conducted within a multiplicity of processes that can lead to a triumphant end either through overt or covert means – every moment counts in politics, and every space ought to be contested without the limitation of time. We therefore cannot ignore the lingering-obvious that is poking at us on the heels of “it’s not yet time” while we continue to murmur in our homes, little gatherings, offices etc as to who we should expect to hold the flag of our party in the next Presidential primaries. It is important that we demonstrate sobriety, integration and not disintegration in every step of the political processes by the various interest-blocs. As such, we must be open to a broader, healthy and progressive public conversation on who best fits to ride on the back of the elephant to victory in the 2024 Presidential elections as a measure of energising and exciting our base, in so far as it is done cordially with the bigger picture in sight while we continue to aggressively pursue the business of running a successful government by helping the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, in consolidating our gains thus far– it is possible to walk and chew gum at the same time. I am therefore inclined on the premise of the above stated principle to offer my firm opinion on the way forward for our party as far as the upcoming Presidential primaries are concerned. The big question then remains, who is capable of delivering unto us the Presidency with no or little great deal of difficulty in the not-too-distant future? Having gauged the pulse of the NPP members, sympathisers and the good people of Ghana, analysed the strengths and electoral records of the prospective candidates seeking to lead our great party and upon critical and reflective thinking, I am without a doubt that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has a towering advantage that can cement our victory in the 2024 general elections. With the obvious being stated coupled with the grace and goodwill that comes with the candidature of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia across the rank and file of our party including the generality of Ghanaians, I shall in subsequent paragraphs and the second part of this epistle, detail a cocktail of reasons why in my considered opinion, I deem him worthy of attaining the high office of the flagbearer of our party and subsequently the President of our great republic. The ‘Bawumia Effect’ – Electoral Record – Personality To put it more succinctly, it is important that an inevitable factor which ought to be considered in the search for the successor to President Nana Akufo Addo, is one’s electoral record viz-a-viz his personality. Indeed, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s first attempt at launching himself into the national political front was when he partnered with the then candidate Nana Akufo Addo in the general election of 2008 as his running mate. The NDC had then fielded an established candidate, in the person of, John Evans Atta Mills (as he then was) of blessed memory, who, having been a Vice-President to then President John Rawlings of blessed memory had gained some considerable level of electoral experience having toured every nook and cranny of our country continuously – he had contested three (3) gruelling general elections in 2000 (first and second round) and in 2004 respectively as both a sitting Vice-President and an opposition leader. That notwithstanding, the running mate who partnered candidate Mills of blessed memory in the general elections of the year 2008 was John Dramani Mahama (as he then was), a man who was not a novice in the context of the Ghanaians politics, a former Deputy and a substantive Minister of Communications with a credit of more than 13 years long standing as an elected Member of Parliament for the Bole-Bamboi constituency. In contrast to these available facts, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, upon his first attempt as a running-mate was able to help Nana Akufo Addo (as he then was) and the NPP to win the first-round elections with over 4 million votes representing an impressive record of over 49 % on their first attempt. Suffice to say that the NPP with a slimmest of margin nearly won that Presidential election which featured Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on the ticket. Fast-forward, despite the fact that John Dramani Mahama enjoyed a lot of support as Vice President and subsequently as President from the Northern Region (as it then was), his fortunes in the region has consistently been declining to the advantage of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who has proven to be a force to reckon within the same territory. Dr. Bawumia’s enviable personality and his strategic deployment of political tools to win the hearts and minds of the people of the North and turn what has been factually known since the inception of the 4th Republic to be the stronghold of the NDC to be a ‘playground’ of the NPP. It was not surprising that prior to the 2020 general elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, reiterated that the battle ground for the general elections will be in the North. True to his words, the outcome of the elections is glaring for all to see – He
