God strike me if I accept NDC appointment – FixTheCountry convenor

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convener for the FixTheCountry Movement, a pressure group in Ghana that is seeking better governance has said the gods of the country should deal with him if he turned his back from the group to pursue an NDC agenda. According to Mr. Vormawor who was speaking on Obuasi-based Aseda FM on Tuesday monitored by Apexnewsgh.com, 11 January 2022, he said his decision to demand good governance stems from the fact that Ghanaians mostly suffer from the hands of politicians. However, responding to a question that some pressure groups that charted a similar path in the past ceased to exist after there was a change in government, Mr. Vormawor said his interest and intention is to see Ghanaians enjoy a better life. “FixTheCountry Movement is here to compel all governments to do what’s right and not only NPP”, he stressed. #FixTheCountry demo against 2022 budget, ‘killer’ taxes today

Members of the Economic fighter’s league and Fix The Country Movement as well as some Ghanaians will today, Friday, 26 November 2021 march to parliament in a move to compel the House to reject the 2022 budget. The demonstration is to express their grievances about the tax increases and introduction of new taxes especially the e-levy in the 2022 budget. The e-levy, which is a 1.75 per cent tax on all e-transactions which include banking and mobile money transactions has infuriated many Ghanaians who are kicking against its implementation. The Accra Regional Police Command says it has made adequate security arrangements for the demonstration. The demonstrators will assemble at Tema Station near the Hockey Pitch and move through Accra Technical University towards Trade Union Congress Traffic Light, through Cedi House, through National Theatre Traffic Light to AU Roundabout and finally end at the Parliament House. Taking into account the traffic situation, personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) according to the Police will be present to ensure the free flow of traffic. The Police also noted it is resolute to collaborate with the demonstrators towards a peaceful demonstration. However, organisers and demonstrators have been entreated to observe all COVID-19 protocols and cooperate with the Police for a successful event. —classfm Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. #FixTheCountry: We got angrier when Akufo-Addo used 29th anniversary to talk about election 2024 – Ernest Yeboah

One of the Conveners of the #FixTheCountry demonstration, Ernesto Yeboah, is incensed at President Akufo-Addo’s comments at the 29th anniversary celebration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He said the President failed to use the platform to address the concerns of the #FixTheCountry campaigners but rather planning on how to win election 2024. Speaking at the 29th-anniversary celebration of the NPP on Thursday, August 5, 2021, the President said “Today, the challenges that confront our country, the difficulties that we have been plunged into by the COVID-19 pandemic are going to give us the opportunity to grow stronger and stronger, and that strengthening of our party and its organs means one thing, I am very confident of it that on December 7, 2024, the new NPP presidential candidate is going to win the election.” But speaking on Eyewitness News, Ernesto Yeboah, who’s also one of the leaders of the Economic Fighters League, said the President’s comments are insensitive, considering the current “hardship” in the country. “They are not thinking about us. Who is thinking about election 2024? We want jobs, bread and many others. This is all they care about in these challenging times. Hearing these things make us angrier.” “They keep pinning everything on COVID-19. They should give us a break,” he added. He called on the youth to resist any attempt by the political ‘leaders’ to steal their future. “They are stealing our future, for a people who have suffered slavery and colonialism. In fact, these are not leaders, they are enemies. We should resist these arrangements to cripple us. The current system we are running breeds charlatans. Let’s change the system and see if anything better will come out of it.” The conveners of the #FixTheCountry movement are seeking the signatures of one million Ghanaians for a petition to demand a new constitution for the country. The social media campaigners are targeting one million signatures to demand what they say will be a fresh constitution intended to represent the hope and aspirations of Ghanaians. Describing the existing 1992 constitution as undemocratic, the group makes the point that the document exists under the guise of constitutional rule, and it is simply a tool deliberately designed to unfairly rob the citizenry of their due. About Wednesday’s #FixTheCountry demonstration Thousands of Ghanaians on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, participated in the much-publicised #FixTheCountry protest. The demonstrators demanded among other things a new constitution and steps to address the many challenges facing the ordinary Ghanaian. The protestors wielded placards with varying inscriptions including ‘#FixOurEducation System now’, ‘A new constitution now’, ‘Justice for Kaaka’ and ‘If Ghana was your personal property, would you run it like this?’, and several others. The well-attended protest was to pile pressure on the government to address Ghana’s numerous challenges, including youth unemployment, poor infrastructure, and high cost of living. The street protest comes after several weeks of social media mobilization amidst a legal tussle that nearly stopped the protest. —Citinewsroom Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Efia Odo, 14 other #FixTheCountry protesters released

Actress Efia Odo and some 14 other #FixTheCountry campaigners who were arrested on Friday for unlawful assembly at the precincts of the high court in Accra, have been released. Some of them were seen wielding placards, as the court heard a matter relating to their intended demonstration. They were made to write their statements at the police station and discharged. They are to report to the police on Monday, 28 June 2021. Meanwhile, the court has ruled that Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame can represent the police in the ongoing case between the state and the #FixTheCountry campaigners, thus, dismissing a preliminary objection against Mr Dame’s involvement in the matter, as raised by the lawyers of the prospective protestors on Monday, 21 June 2021. The lawyers of the #FixTheCountry campaigners stood on the Public Order Act to advance their arguments but Justice Ruby Aryeetey of the Criminal Division of the High Court ruled today, Friday, 25 June 2021 that the Police Service is not competent to handle a suit on behalf of the state without the authorisation of the Attorney General. The ruling paves the way for the court to now head the substantive matter between the #FixTheCountry conveners and the state. Mr Dame, on Thursday, said there is nothing pressing or urgent about the intended #FixTheCountry demonstration for it to be allowed to come off. In an interview with Francisca Kakra Forson on Accra-based Metro TV’s Good Afternoon Ghana programme on Thursday, 24 June 2021, Mr Dame wondered: “…What is the purpose for this demonstration?” “They [#FixTheCountry conveners] say they are demonstrating on account of broken promises by successive governments, so, that shows really it’s a demonstration on their own showing”, explaining: “It’s not about the NPP”. “It’s on account of factors that have resulted since independence, so, it’s not urgent, it’s not pressing”, he asserted. Stressing his arguments against the intended demonstration, Mr Dame asked: “If you’re demonstrating about broken promises by successive governments since independence, what is the urgency about it?” “And, in any case”, he observed: Are they not also mobilising through other means – social media and what have you?” Anyway, he pointed out, “the matter is in court. [It’s as] simple as that. I’ll rest my argument here”. The Supreme Court quashed an earlier ruling by the high court that placed an injunction on the demonstration until COVID-19 was no more. The injunction was on account of a prayer by the police to the high court to stop the march in keeping with the mass-gathering restrictions instituted by the government to mitigate the spread of the virus, which has, so far, killed close to 800 people in Ghana since it was first confirmed in the country on 12 March 2020. The state and the conveners are still battling the matter in court. Mr Dame believes although the Akufo-Addo government has been magnanimous to the #FixTheCountry campaigners in terms of its overtures to them, he suspects they are up to no good. “They actually indicated that they wanted to be heard, so, what did the government do? In an unprecedented fashion, the government constituted virtually its top leaders in government to engage them on their concerns”. “I was one of them, the minister of defence, minister of foreign affairs, minister for the interior, minister of finance, and a few other ministers – national security minister. Clearly it was successful. When I was at the meeting, they actually refused to speak. I understand when I left, they made a few remarks and that was it. I don’t know why. So, that tells you the motive is, perhaps, more mischievous and deeper than [meets the eye]”, he told Kakra Forson. Responding to why the court case has become more like a personal pet project of his, Mr Dame riposted: “I’m hands-on if necessary because the buck rests with the attorney general”, explain: “I’m the principal legal adviser to the president of Ghana; this is a matter of immense public interest, a matter that the president has deemed it necessary to convene most of his top ministers; finance, trade, interior, defence, foreign affairs, to meet such prospective demonstrators and the matter has resulted in a court proceeding; what is awkward or what is absurd about the attorney general representing state?” “It shows that the government is actually concerned about them and that concern was exhibited long before we even went to court – by engaging them”, he noted. –classfm Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Police cautioned the public not to be misled by FixTheCountry conveners

The Ghana Police Service has caution the general public to avoid calls by the conveners of the #FixTheCountry to demonstrate. Police said, even although the Supreme Court has quashed an earlier order granted by a High Court restraining the conveners from protesting, it does not give them the right to protest. The Police explained that the decision of the Supreme Court was based on the indefinite terms in which the ex parte Order was made. “However, the Supreme Court refused to restrain the Ghana Police Service, their agents, assigns, workmen, or workwomen from unlawfully interfering with the constitutional right of the conveners of the FixTheCountry protest from embarking on a public demonstration. “The substantive case between the Police and the conveners on their right to demonstrate is still pending at the High Court (Criminal Division 1) Accra, and slated for hearing on Monday, 14 June 2021,” a Police statement signed by DSP Efia Tenge Head of Public Affairs Unit said. It is recalled that the #FixTheCountry campaigners were served with an injunction by the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, 6 May 2021, which prevented them from demonstrating against the government due to the imposition of COVID-19 restrictions on mass gatherings. The campaigners, immediately on 7 May 2021, filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking to set aside the order of the high court. Due to the high court injunction, the intended 9 May #FixTheCountry demonstration was done virtually. The campaigners intend to protest against the high cost of living in the country and demand better governance.
