The Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa constituency, Mr Kobina Tahir Hammond, has submitted a fresh petition to the National Vetting Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) requesting the disqualification of all three contenders in the upcoming parliamentary primaries. This development comes after the dismissal of Hammond’s initial petition to the Ashanti Regional Vetting Committee on January 2, 2024, where he sought the disqualification of his primary opponent, Mr Sammy Binfoh Darkwa. The vetting committee, chaired by NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, had given both candidates the green light to proceed with their campaign for the primary. However, expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome, Mr Hammond has taken the matter to the National Vetting Committee, citing his discontent with the decision made by the regional committee. In his petition, Mr Hammond argues that his opponents, including Sammy Binfoh Darkwa, Managing Director of the Ghana Publishing Company, are ineligible to participate in the parliamentary primaries due to alleged violations of Article 12(4) and (7) of the party’s constitution. K.T. Hammond’s import restrictions bill stopped by Parliament for the 3rd time
For the third time, Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond‘s attempt to introduce the Import Restrictions Bill has been stopped by Parliament. The proposed legislation, called the Export and Import (Restrictions on Importation of Selected Strategic Product) Regulations, 2023, aims to limit the importation of 22 strategic goods into Ghana. However, the Minority in Parliament strongly opposed the bill, expressing concerns from various business groups and highlighting potential negative effects on the country’s businesses. Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin delayed the presentation of the bill until November 30, 2023, urging the Minister to address the concerns raised by the Minority before proceeding. This delay is seen as a move to ensure thorough examination and consideration of the proposed legislation.
