Upper East Region Is Food Secured Dont Panic – Minister
Hon Stephen Yakubu, the Upper East Regional Minister has allayed the fears of residents in the Region of any possible food insecurity owing to some challenges in accessing fertilizers by farmers. He said the Regional Department of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) was leasing with its Headquarters to secure enough fertilizers for farmers in the Region and was hopeful that the rainfall pattern this year would help boost crop yields. Hon Yakubu said this when Madam Kati Csaba, the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana called on him at his office to discuss issues of food security in the Region. The Minister recounted the days when compost manure made of cattle and ruminate droppings was used on farms as fertilizer but noted that due to climate change and reduction in the animal population, chemical fertilizers had taken over in anticipation of higher yields. Even though there may be some challenges in the use of inorganic fertilizers, the Minister urged farmers to reconsider the use of such fertilizers which had long time benefits on crops and farmlands. Hon Yakubu, who is also the Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), assured the High Commissioner of peace and security in the region and said security service personnel were on high alert for any possible terrorist attack. “We are always on high alert to prevent any possible attack in the Region. The government has been providing enough logistics to that effect, and we are constantly reviewing our security plans,” he told the Canadian Commissioner. Dr. Sayibu Pabi Gariba, the Regional Police Commander, said despite the intermittent conflicts in Bawku and between the people of Doba and Kandiga, the security situation in the region was under control. He further assured the High Commissioner and her entourage of maximum security while on their visit, and urged them to go about their duties without fear. The Regional Director of MoFA, Mr. Francis Annor said all 15 Municipalities and District offices of MoFA received pick-up vehicles, 222 motorbikes and computers from the Canadian Government to support them improve on both office and fieldwork. Paramount Chief of the Chiana traditional area who doubles as the current president of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Naba Ditundini Adiali Thomas-More
Paramount Chief of Chiana Traditional Area Unhappy With his District Demarcation
The Paramount Chief of the Chiana traditional area who doubles as the current president of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Naba Ditundini Adiali Thomas-More has expressed frustration over the demarcation of his district. Naba Ditundini Adiali Thomas-More, raised the issue when the Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu paid him a courtesy visit to his palace “In the event where there is going to be demarcation in the region, it is the only side of the region that is not properly demarcated. You will all appreciate the fact that we need to be connected to the rest of towns within, constructing a road from Kayoro, Bindaa then to Paga, well and good perfect, no argument about it, we all love it. We have a market in Chiana where our sisters who speak Kassem cross a certain river the Bindaa, Gbanu, and other areas doing business with us. According to the Paramount Chief, if someone is seriously sick in any of the communities under Chiana electoral area, they will never refer that patient to Paga hospital. “We will never refer that person to the Paga hospital, never we will dream that we want to refer a patient from this enclave to Paga, we will never do that. The nearby community to us is Sandema. If Sandema doesn’t have the necessary facility to carter for that person, we go to Navrongo then, Bolga to Tamale which is our teaching hospital. He said the situation affects all of them because their brothers and sisters who want to come to Chiana have similar problems. “Our brothers and sisters who are in sirigu, mirigu, kandiga are facing a similar problem. Look at Yua, in the middle of Kassena Nankana West doing business with Navrongo Municipal Assemble, very awkward. Look at the current problem we are facing, I have been stopped there severally going to sirigu, the Doba/ Kandiga issue, if we have taken the time and demarcate this place properly… You see the demarcation doesn’t affect the traditional and cultural practices. Let’s do something so that we can be happy as a region”. He blamed the kind of politics played in the Region, which in most cases always denied the people of Upper East what is due them as development. UER: Upper East Region will get the larger share of the resources–Stephen Yakubu
The Upper East Regional Minister-designate Stephen Yakubu has said, the people of the Upper East Region will get its larger share of the resources that will be shared by the government. The Former Ghana Ambassador for Morocco made the revelation in an exclusive interview with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh.com on Monday January 25, 2021. Following the Abysmal performance witnessed by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its candidates in the region during the 2020 general elections, most citizens across the region both home and abroad have started registering some displeasure indicating, that the government is not going to pay any attention to the people of Upper East after such an abysmal performance by the party. However, the perception deepens, after President Akufo Addo’s appointment of his Ministers without any representative from the Upper East Region. But speaking to the Upper East Regional Minister-designate Stephen Yakubu, he assured the people of Upper East to be confident of receiving their larger share of the resources from the government. “We are developing even Volta Region, where we know that is not even our stronghold. So, as for the government, the government doesn’t distribute resources based on voting patterns. We even want to develop where people don’t like you more, so that next time the people will like us and vote for us. I am very sure that Upper East will get their larger share of the resources which is going to be shared and am going to fight for that one on one. You know there is an index that they use, and Common Fund is been distributed depending on the poverty levels in the country. So, for example in Accra, some are getting more Common Fund than Accra Municipalities, so that is the way is distributed”. “So, what am going to be concentrating on is, how to pull more resources into the region, not only even from government but also from other investment into the region. Because Private investment even creates more jobs than the government. Let’s do things differently and achieve different results”.
