Tension Between TEWU-GH and TUC: Calls for Fair Representation on University Councils

In a strong rebuttal to recent remarks made by Joshua Ansah, the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has voiced its discontent regarding the union’s representation on university governing councils. Apexnewsgh reports

During a discussion on Kumasi FM’s show hosted by Elisha Adarkwah, Mr. Charles Arthur, the Local Chairman of TEWU-GH at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), characterized Ansah’s comments as “biased” and lacking in informed perspective.

Mr. Ansah had asserted his determination to resist any attempts to include TEWU-GH in the councils, a viewpoint that Mr. Arthur argues undermines the principles of organized labor and fair representation. In his critique, Mr. Arthur emphasized that, as the head of Organised Labour and TUC General-Secretary, Mr. Ansah should remain neutral concerning the interests of various unions.

Quoting Section 112 of Ghana’s Labour Act, Mr. Arthur stated that Organised Labour not only includes the TUC but also encompasses all recognized labor unions, employers’ associations, and the government. He contended that Mr. Ansah’s position disregards the necessity to advocate for the collective interests of all unions, rather than solely those affiliated with TUC.

Mr. Arthur highlighted the significant membership advantage of TEWU-GH over its counterpart TEWU-TUC, particularly within KNUST, arguing that this demographic strength warrants appropriate representation on the university’s governing council.

He urged Mr. Ansah to better comprehend the ongoing tensions between TEWU-GH and TEWU-TUC before making public statements that may exacerbate the situation.

Warning of potential unrest across universities in Ghana if TEWU-GH continues to be overlooked, Mr. Arthur identified KNUST as a possible flashpoint for escalating tensions. As the dialogue surrounding labor representation unfolds, the call for fair inclusion in university governance remains a central issue for the education sector.
