Kufour Laments Sidelined: ‘I Mean Nothing to NPP Now

In a revealing conversation with Abetifi MP and aspiring NPP flagbearer, Bryan Acheampong, former President John Agyekum Kufuor expressed profound disappointment at what he perceives as neglect and exclusion by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Having once guided the party to two historic electoral victories, Kufuor’s recent comments reflect a growing sense of marginalization within the party’s current structure.

“If this party still has elders… I am one,” Kufuor asserted, underscoring his long-standing role and the contributions he has made to the party’s development. He voiced concern over the apparent lack of communication and engagement from the party’s leadership. Despite his extensive service and institutional memory, Kufuor feels increasingly sidelined from significant discussions and decisions that shape the NPP.

“Have I deteriorated to the point where, after being fed, I’d claim I haven’t eaten? No—I haven’t reached that stage yet. My mind and memory are intact,” he declared, standing firm in his ability to contribute meaningfully to party affairs.

Reflecting on the NPP’s journey from its ideological roots in the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) through decades of political struggle, Kufuor took pride in the party’s rise to power in 2000—a significant milestone in Ghana’s democratic landscape.

“I’ve been quiet, but make no mistake, I’ve been watching. Closely,” Kufuor stated. “The least the party can do… is keep me informed. Let me hear what’s happening.” His remarks conveyed a deep emotional strain over feeling neglected by the very organization he helped shape.

Expressing confusion, he added, “And now… I’m being sidelined? Ignored? I don’t understand it. I really don’t.” His perplexity highlighted the disconnection he feels from the NPP leadership.

Kufuor served as Ghana’s president from 2001 to 2009 and is widely recognized for reinforcing democratic governance and initiating significant economic reforms during his administration. His recent sentiments mark a troubling chapter in the history of a man who once held a pivotal role in the NPP and the country’s political evolution.
