Twelve individuals have been arrested for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities that caused significant damage to a section of the active railway line connecting Takoradi, Akyem, and Nsuta in Ghana’s Western Region, officials disclosed on Monday.
The arrests were the result of a coordinated operation led by Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson, who was joined by National Security officers. According to reports, the suspects were apprehended at the scene as the team arrived, catching them in the act.
Minister Nelson confirmed the arrests during an interview on the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5FM monitored by Apexnewsgh, on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. He detailed the scale of destruction, noting that approximately three kilometres of the 60-kilometre rail line had been damaged, severely disrupting manganese haulage and other vital operations of the Ghana Railway Company.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as they work to restore the affected railway and prevent further illegal activities that threaten the region’s infrastructure and economic lifelines.
