The Upper East Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr. William Obeng Adarkwa, has clarified rumors circulating among applicants for the upcoming exercise.
Some applicants had claimed that the EC had stated that it would not select those with rural bank accounts. However, in an interview with Apexnewsgh.com, Mr. Adarkwa explained the issue, stating that the challenge lies with the rural banking system in the region.
According to Mr. Adarkwa, the rural banking system is not well developed, and Apex bank, the mother bank, faces difficulties in confirming or denying the existence of some rural banks. This leads to challenges in sending payments to these banks, and sometimes, applicants’ account details may be incorrect or incomplete. He emphasized that traditional banks are better networked, making it easier to receive payments promptly.
“The issue is this, you know our rural banking system here is not much developed and all the rural bank, Apex bank is their mother bank. And according to the account people, they have challenge sending all those to Apex because sometimes you will go their Apex will tell you certain bank is not linked up in their in their system and they cannot confirm or deny the bank existence. Therefore, when you give them money to be paid in some of these banks it becomes a challenge. In terms of networking is only the big traditional banks that are well networked. Therefore, if you have your allowance paid through them, you can receive it the following day”.
Mr. Adarkwa clarified that the EC is not completely excluding rural banks but rather encouraging applicants to use traditional banks for their own convenience.
He explained that during a training session, he advised applicants to use popular banks to ensure timely payment of allowances. The EC boss emphasized that the challenge is not unique to the EC but also affects Apex bank, which is the mother bank across the country.
Giving his concluding remark, the EC is not discriminating against rural bank account holders but rather encouraging applicants to use traditional banks to avoid payment challenges. The issue lies with the rural banking system’s limitations, and the EC is seeking to ensure efficient payment processes.
