On a somber day in Okumah, a community in the Krachi West Municipality of the Oti Region, Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang arrived with a mission of compassion and solidarity.
Her visit followed a devastating boat accident on October 11, 2025, which claimed the lives of 16 people.
As she walked through the village, Prof Opoku-Agyemang was met with tearful families, mourning the loss of their loved ones. She approached each family with heartfelt condolences, assuring them that their pain was shared by the entire nation. “You are not alone in this time of mourning. The Government is with you. Together, we will work to ensure such a tragedy never happens again,” she said, her words offering a measure of comfort to the grieving community.
In a tangible display of support, the Vice President presented over 600 life jackets and a range of relief items to both the bereaved families and the survivors. These donations aimed not only to provide immediate assistance but also to promote safety for those who rely on the Volta Lake for transportation.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang went further to announce that the government would cover the full cost of burials for all the victims. She also revealed that swift measures were being introduced to support survivors and improve safety standards on the lake to prevent future tragedies.
