WAPCo Reschedules Critical Maintenance Exercise, Averts Potential Power Crisis

Apexnewsgh

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has announced a new schedule for its planned maintenance exercise, known as pigging. Apexnewsgh reports

The exercise, which was initially set for January, will now take place from February 3 to March 2, 2025.

During this one-month period, WAPCo will halt gas flow to Ghana, but the postponement of the exercise has averted a potential power crisis that would have affected the country’s power supply. The cleaning exercise is critical, as it aligns with industry best practices, and its postponement has brought relief to the new government and energy stakeholders.

Had the pigging exercise proceeded as originally scheduled, Ghana would have faced significant power supply challenges, as energy producers would not have had sufficient gas to operate their plants and generate electricity. To mitigate this, the new government would have needed to spend $90 million to purchase fuel for the power plants.

Fortunately, WAPCo’s decision to delay the pigging exercise has alleviated this concern, and the country can breathe a sigh of relief.

The new schedule will enable the necessary maintenance to be carried out without disrupting the power supply, ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply for Ghana.
