Celebrated investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has blamed the brutality and killings perpetrated by the police and military in the country on President Nana Akufo-Addo, stressing that as Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces he cannot be exonerated from blame since he has failed to act on such matters.
His assertion comes on the back of the brutalisation of some citizens in Wa yesterday by soldiers who had been enraged by the stealing of a phone and other items belonging to one of their colleagues.
“…You cannot be calling yourself the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces in a democratic Ghana while this barbarity and stupidity happen every day.
Your hands are stained with the blood of the dead and the injured because of your refusal to act and stop them,” Mr Awuni wrote on social media.
He then gave a list of unprofessional actions by the security agencies and how the President failed to take appropriate punitive actions so as to avert future recurrence.
“If the soldiers who killed in Techiman South had been punished, those who opened fire in Ejura would have thought twice before pulling the trigger.
If the senior military officer who led in the assault of Caleb Kudah hadn’t been “elevated” to a Commanding Officer of 64 Infantry Regiment, those soldiers who went on a rampage in Wa would have thought twice before unleashing brutality on unarmed, non-violent citizens going about their normal duties,” he said.
Mr Awuni asserted that Ghanaian are already unhappy with the current economic hardship and the action and inaction of the police only serve to exacerbate an already bad situation.
“Ghanaians are already angry about the economic hardship and the daily mess they are subjected to due to the decades of mismanagement.
Don’t keep pouring fuel into the fire by allowing the military, so-called national security operatives and party hoodlums clothed with the power of the state to continue to abuse the citizens you swore to protect…So act. And stop the mindless killings and brutalities,” he warned.
Meanwhile the brutalisation of some residents of Wa has been met with condemnation by many Ghanaians, especially on social media.
