Youth Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) in Ghana: Trends and Regional Disparities

Apexnewsgh

According to the 2023 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES), approximately 1.9 million youth aged 15-35 in Ghana were not engaged in education, employment, or training (NEET) in the third quarter of 2023. Apexnewsgh reports

Females accounted for the majority (1.2 million) of youth NEET, compared to males (715,691).

Regional disparities were evident, with the Greater Accra Region having the highest concentration of youth NEET (565,360), followed by the Ashanti, Central, Eastern, and Western regions. The NEET rate was significantly higher for females (21.0%) than males (15.0%), with Greater Accra having the highest NEET rate (26.9%).

Urban areas had a higher NEET rate (20.6%) compared to rural areas (15.0%). However, there was a decline in the NEET rate from 24.1% in Q3 2022 to 18.2% in Q3 2023, with a total decrease of 462,998 youth NEET. All regions except Greater Accra experienced a decline in youth NEET between Q3 2022 and Q3 2023.

The World Youth Skills Day, commemorated on July 15, highlights the importance of equipping youth with relevant skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship. The 2024 theme, “Youth Skills for Peace and Development,” underscores the need for targeted interventions to address the disparities in youth NEET rates across regions and gender.
