2020 in review: Internet sensations of the year

Although the coronavirus pandemic took a toll on many people and disrupted the way of life of many in Ghana, some Ghanaians defied the odds and brought a glimmer of hope to millions across the country. For their reward, they become top internet trends for their sensational stories on various social media pages. Whether via hot photos on Instagram, viral videos on Facebook and Twitter, or topical discussions on YouTube, these Ghanaians, made their mark in different endeavours and proved the Ghanaian’s can-do spirit. GhanaWeb.com has compiled the following list of people whose activities grabbed the attention of the ever-bustling internet community. Hajia Bintu This all-round beautiful and voluptuous lady shot to fame after a video of her dancing trended for days on Twitter and other social media sites. She describes herself as a brands influencer, model and business person, but many of the conversations about her has centred on her impeccable body and humourous Tik Tok videos. Kelvin Odartey: Teenager who built a car In September this year, Kelvin Odartey, a teenager who had just completed his Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), shot to fame after a story of a car he had built went viral. He became an internet sensation when a video of the car, which he built with scraps, began trending on the internet. In the video, teachers, his colleague students and passersby looked impressed as they watched him operate his car and pick a few of his friends in school uniform. Elizabeth Yamoah: 57-year-old BECE graduate The story of a 57-year-old woman, Madam Elizabeth Yamoah, enthralled many in Ghana. Madam Yamoah enrolled at Odoben Presbyterian Junior High School (JHS) in 2017 and was among the candidates that sat for the 2020 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Madam Yamoah said she was determined to continue her education at the Senior High School(SHS) level and become a professional nurse in future. She said she was motivated by the introduction of free Senior High school (SHS) policy introduced by the government and her children to return to the classroom after decades of absence. Gakpetor: PRESEC Legon’s super-sub at the 2020 NSMQ Gakpetor Daniel Kekeli, a student of Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC) Legon, gained internet fame for his outstanding performance in the 2020 National Science and Maths Quiz competition. PRESEC beat Adisadel College and Opoku Ware School on October 8, 2020, to emerge as champions of the national quiz and this young chap – who usually came in as a substitute – played a key role in the attainment of that feat. His name trended again in November when someone leaked his final results for the 2020 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) online. Social media was inundated with his results slip which showed he had obtained A1 – the best mark – in all eight subjects. AY Poyoo: The GOAT AY Poyoo broke the internet this year with his hit song ‘GOAT’. His unique but somehow grotesque outfits also endeared him to netizens both in Ghana and across Africa. He describes himself as a full-time entertainer, a rapper, and an actor. Kumerica ‘Kumerica’ – the name and the movement – took social media by storm. It emerged and trended for weeks on Twitter out of a fantastical desire by some natives of the Ashanti Region to be known as Kumericans. As part of the sensation online, it was said that the entire Ashanti Region popularly known as Oseikrom should now be referred to as the United States of Kumerica, USK for short. The trend intensified when photos of Kumerica passport, currency and flag began trending online. After their video went viral, a lot of folks on social media have blasted them in every direction as the video shows them doing immoral acts. Nana Aba Anamoah blasts DKB for making a joke about her forehead

Multiple award-winning journalist and acting manager of GhOne TV, Nana Aba Anamoah has blasted comedian, DKB over a joke he decided to make about her forehead. In a post seen on her Twitter timeline, Nana Aba Anamoah called DKB a ‘foolish boy’ in reaction to the comment. In the video in question, DKB tried to react to Medikal’s appreciation gift to his boss Cris Waddle for all the things he has done for him over the years. Medikal had gifted Waddle a brand new iPhone 12 Pro Max and GH¢5,000 to buy airtime. Reacting to that, DKB said that Criss Waddle rather needs blood tonic to help him gain weight. According to DKB, Criss Waddle lacks nothing but he looks like a dry fish with his hard body like Nana Aba Anamoah’s forehead. This comment obviously didn’t sit well with Nana Aba as she has taken to Twitter to fire him.   Zionflix Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. MTN injects Ghanaian touch into Xmas Carols

MTN injects Ghanaian touch into Xmas Carols

It was the plan of MTN, organisers of the MTN Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols held at the Fantasy Dome at the weekend to among other things, present a Carols Night with an authentic Ghanaian flavour, and they were spot on, many patrons have said. From the songs performed by the various artistes to the drama piece presented by the ever-improving Roverman Productions, the show reflected everything Ghanaian. The group’s hilarious portrayal of the birth of Jesus Christ in a typical Ghanaian setting impressed members of the audience, both at the event venue and online, as the actors and actresses sang, danced and used current Ghanaian terms that easily excited the audience. For many patrons of the show, Ebo Whyte’s Roverman Productions was simply good. In the music segment of the show, popular singer, Kuami Eugene and all the other musicians on the bill presented some of the most popular western Christmas carols in different local languages and also sang some original Ghanaian songs in various languages. Kurl Songx The other artistes on the line-up, Drew, Kurl Songx, Achiaa, Adepa, Gabi Nova, and Lasmid also sprayed some energy into the atmosphere as they took turns to rock the stage. MTN’s ‘home’ choir, the Viva Voices gave the Carols Service the choral feel with some well-rehearsed songs that got the audience tapping their feet and waving along. Comedian and MC for the show, Foster Romanus did not disappoint – he sang, danced and generally entertained the audience as he laced his presentations with witty jokes that tickled the people. For those watching from outside the venue, the MC dished out free airtime in what was described as the “fastest fingers” segment of the show, which was MTN’s end-of-year goodies to its customers and patrons of the show. Quite understandably, members of the audience at the venue were relatively few due to COVID-19 restrictions, for which reason one could not feel the charged atmosphere that usually characterises such powerful shows. Nonetheless, the various comments by the patrons online indicated that the event was an exhilarating one for the patrons. The Nine Lessons were read by Theophilus Nuer, MTN Bright Scholarship beneficiary, Dr. Elsie Effah Kauffman, hostess of the National Science and Mathematics Quiz, Jeremiah Nartey, Media Manager, MTN and Madam Olivia Quartey, Deputy Director-General in charge of Managerial Operations at the National Communications Authority (NCA). The rest were comedian, General Ntatie, Samson Lardi Ayenini, broadcaster, lawyer and the current Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Journalist of the Year, Dr. Tony Aubyn, Executive Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ebenezer Terkpeh, Vice President, Local Staff Association, MTN and Nathan Lee-Winans, MTN Distributor. This year, 2020, has been a difficult one. MTN and some of you have faced difficulties and we thank you for your patience and loyalty. We are blessed to be celebrating this occasion together. Hopefully, next year, 2021, will be much better,” the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN, Selorm  Adadevoh stated. kasapaonline Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana/Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Nana Addo celebrates Samini on his birthday

Today marks the 39th birthday of Ghanaian recording artist Samini. And as the goodwill messages poor in for the “my own” singer, from far and near, I guess one that would stand out for Samini is the one that came in from the Nation’s president-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo. He was one of the foremost musicians who supported the 4more4Nana movement that culminated in the re-lection of Nana Addo. Nana Addo took to his Instagram page to celebrate Samini who did a campaign song for Nana during the electioneering period known as Kpoyaka. “Happy Birthday, @samini_dagaati. Thank you for all your support. God bless. #Kpoyaka,” Nana Addo wrote on Instagram. Another celebrity who got the honour of a birthday wish from the president was Prince David Osei who also recently celebrated his birthday. It must be noted that he was also very much part of the 4more4Nana movement. GH Base Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. “I was Awarded With Paper As A Best Driver In Upper East Region” – Dada B confess

Mr. Joseph Kwabena Baah aka Dada B, a 2009 overall best driver for the Upper East Region has raised a red flag over how he has been treated unfairly over what he describes as something that has been like a mere ghost presentation. According to him he was only given a sheet paper after receiving an award for being the best driver in the region in his 40 year experience. Making references to back his claim, Dada B indicated that it’s very disheartening to witness other awardees such as the miss Ghana, best teacher, best farmer etc receive real awards, but for him to receive nothing after being crowned as a best driver with a 40 year experience who has been able to safe human life for many years. “I’m sometimes dejected but I try to encourage myself. My family asks for my award only for me to show them a paper, and they only begin to describe me as a joke. How can you claim yourself an award winner with this common sheet of paper? At least receiving something little valuable will encourage young ones who look up onto me in driving”, he added. “He further disclosed that the award was named during the Late Atta Mills’ era through to John Mahama’s era till Nana Addo became president. “They have all been made aware, Nana Addo once met me at the Bolga Palace where the Bolga Naa- ba introduced me to him. He disclosed to myghanamedia.com in an exclusive interview. “NPP is my own party and I thank God for bringing Nana Addo back to the thrown. I am of the firm conviction and plead with the President that he should immediately hear my cry and do something about my award, I urgently need it”, he cried out.
