Professor Kwesi Botchwey, a former Finance Minister, has advised the Akufo-Addo government to accept the fact that the economy is in a crisis and tell the people the truth. He said: “Our current travails can be overcome provided we level with the people. The solution to a problem begins with recognizing that there is one. It must start with the recognition that it is a crisis and level with the people. We must wind down the hubris, the arrogance, and the show of impunity that the people see”, The lecture was on the theme: “On the state of the nation’s economy and politics, 65 years after independence, the path to sustainable development and democratic consolidation.” Prof Botchwey said at the 65th Independence Day Lecture held at the Economics Department of the University of Ghana, Legon, on Monday, March 7, 2022. A day after President Nana Akufo-Addo asked Ghanaians for help in getting the economy back on track. According to President Akufo-Addo at Ghana’s 65th Independence Day anniversary, he will not renege on his pledge to help create progressive and prosperous Ghana” but he, however, cannot do it alone. “I need the backing of each and every one of you, if we are to bounce back together and build a Ghana beyond aid”, he pleaded at Cape Coast, Central Region on Sunday, 6 March 2022. The anniversary theme: ‘Working together; bouncing back together’, “imposes a duty on all of us” as far as what it means to be a Ghanaian and loving one’s country, is concerned. Borrowing a leaf from history, the President recounted how “our forebears worked together with the belief that Ghana, once free and independent, could make her own unique contribution to the growth of world civilization and be able to generate wealth and prosperity for the masses of her people”. “They forebears put away ethnic, political and religious affiliations and came together to work for the liberation of the Gold Coast from colonial and imperial domination”, he pointed. “Each one of them”, Mr. Akufo-Addo explained, “contributed their quota toward a free, independent Ghana in which we now live”. “All of us gathered here and millions out there – inside our borders and outside – share this love for the place we call home”, President said. According to him, “When we make wrong choices, we must act to set things right” and “when those put in charge of running affairs get it wrong, we must have the courage to say so”. “That is our patriotic duty and calling. But, we must not, at any given opportunity, run down our nation simply because we can, all to achieve a narrow, political can partisan interest”, President condemned. Ghana’s democratic system of governance, he noted, “acknowledges that we’ll have differences of opinion on the way forward for our nation. We must, however, recognize that the expression of those diverse views should not undermine the fundamental unity we need to forge to advance the cause of our nation”, President added. The Ghanaian leader said despite the harm done to the economy by the COVID-19 pandemic, his government will soldier on to fix things. “Fellow Ghanaians, for the last two years, we’ve seen, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the disruption of the global supply chain, and the global financial system; the opening up of a huge funding gap in virtually all countries, the widening of the fiscal deficit and increased public debt level. Simply put, there are difficulties everywhere in the world. We are seeing increasing global freight rates, rising crude oil prices – which means rising fuel prices; rising cost of items on the market, as a result of inflationary pressures and the depreciation of currencies”. “Inasmuch as these are all happening in all countries around the world, the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has not thrown up its hands in despair. We’re not looking for the easy way out”, he clarified. He said: “We’re determined to become even more self-reliant and, in the process, find Ghanaian solutions to Ghanaian problems, as, already, we have made considerable progress toward this end”. He noted that, for example, Ghana, today, “is a net exporter of foodstuffs thanks to the success of the programme for Planting for Food and Jobs” while pointing out: “Free Senior High School is ensuring money, or the lack of it, is no longer a barrier toward the attainment of a minimum of senior high school education for every Ghanaian child – an important tool for the development of our nation”. “We’re processing more of our cocoa in Ghana than at any other time in our history”, adding: “The ‘One District-One Factory’ initiative, which has seen the ongoing construction of 278 factories cross the country – 106 completed – is part of the foundation, on which we are building a comprehensive industrialization programme by the development of strategic anchor industries and the coordinated exploitation of our bauxite and iron ore resources”. Also, the President noted: “We have opened up this country through the construction of roads, more than any other government has in the history of the fourth republic”. Further, he said: “Our efforts at digitization are improving transparency, accountability and efficiency in the public sector and helping to accelerate the growth of our economy”. “Fellow Ghanaians, these and more are what we have used tax revenues for over the last five years. In all your communities, villages, towns, constituencies and regions, you’re seeing your taxes at work – whether it is the construction of a classroom block, clinic, small-town water facility, factory or road and we will continue down this path”, he stressed. Depreciation of The Cedi: Why We Should Panic
Development Economist Dr. Michael Ayamga Adongo has said, has maintained that when cedi depreciated under President Mills and Mahama, there was more external confidence in the economy than NPP Akufo-Addo’s administration Read the full details below: When the Cedi depreciated under Mills & Mahama, there was external confidence in the economy. We could walk into the capital markets to borrow at competitive rates because Ghana was not rated in the Cs with negative outlook. Investors were willing and investing in the economy. In fact, the depreciation occurred because oil companies and multinationals were demanding dollars to set up their production. Such PRODUCTIVITY-TRIGGERED DEPRECIATION OF THE CEDI WAS GOOD OMEN AS IT USHERED IN THE FIRST DOUBLE DIGIT GROWTH OF THE ECONOMY IN RECENT HISTORY. At that time, government was not broke and seeking to directly withdraw money from people’s wallets. We had not used our natural resources to collateralize loans. We had not exceeded the disaster threshold of 77% debt to GDP ratio. Above all, there was social justice. Young men and women in our Universities had hope. Hope that they had decent chances at landing jobs regardless of his surnames and political connection. Today we have the exact opposite. The Cedi is depreciating because we have depleted our resources and owe so much. The Cedi is depreciating because the outlook of our economy is negative. The depreciation we see with the Cedi today is not caused by the usual cyclical dollar demand by merchants to stock for Christmas or at the end of the financial year when multi-nationals are repatriating profits earned in Cedi. In the last four years, the good management of previous governments made it possible for this government to go to the capital market, borrow and use the dollars to shore up the Cedi and then go about tooting the titles of members of their economic team. The least said about social justice and equity the better. Today young people are made to spend their savings on forms and queue for weeks in search of jobs that have already been distributed by the ruling elite to their families, friends, wives and girlfriends. As my Senior brother Prof. Raymond Atuguba graciously said, “Ghana is broke”. Graciously because we are not just broke. Ghana is broke with a bad reputation so she can’t borrow. There is a reason to worry. There is reason to lose sleep. Thanks to the crack economic team. Elected Officers of the NDC don’t want to open up to anybody – Mogtari
Mrs. Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has said elected officers of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) don’t want to open up to anybody, stressing that they think “Nobody should tell them how to do their job”. Mrs. Bawah Mogtari made the pronouncement in an interview on CTV’s morning show Dwabre Mu on Friday, 25 February 2022 monitored by Apexnewsgh.com. Advising her party, she said, “I want to call on the NDC, on all of us, that everybody has a contribution; some have [knowledge], some have experience, some have some competencies that even if you become a party executive, you haven’t seen before, so, if you go as an elected official and you think all the work is in your pocket, across the country, then the work will be difficult”. “This one is a direct appeal to the party activists, supporters, volunteers: Look, where there is no cohesion, the work will be difficult”. She stressed. “Apart from that, I went through about five, six of the Westminster political courses – every political party has a group that thinks for the party”, she said. “There’s leadership but look, we must open up; politics has changed”, stressing that “It is not like it used to be”. “Look at the number of strategies that even the opposition NPP had about polling, about this, about that”. “I remember the first time that I participated in political polling; it was under a man called Carl Silverman. I wasn’t even a branch executive but each time they came to the ministries, they always looked for people who are affiliated to tell them which officers are NPP, NDC because, at that time, they were removing a lot of people from their offices because Kufuor had just come into power”, she narrated. “All of these things were research-based, so, our party, too, must have its people”, “We must start looking at cohesion”, she reiterated. According to Mrs. Bawa, “You can always tell there is some gap”, explaining: “Elected officers, they don’t want to open up to anybody” and have the “Nobody should tell them how to do their job” kind of attitude. “I even sent a message forwarded to me to a very key person in the party; the person called me back and asked me: ‘Ah, why are you forwarding this to me by text? Oh, please, it’s not safe”. “What is not safe about a text?”. “We’ve been told how people monitor our phones and everything”, she added. “Tony Aidoo has always been saying something every day: we must learn to speak the truth even to our own internal power. We must arrive at a point where; what is it we are looking for? We want power”. “Today, me, if you ask me, I have no doubt in my mind that President Mahama is actually one of the individuals who have the pulse of Ghana at his fingertips”. She said She added: “A lot of the lies and propaganda; we have come to see that all that our opponents wanted was power to take whatever was available, even for the poor Ghanaians. Go round the country and see”. Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana/Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen
Navrongo: Some Residents send strong message to the leadership of NPP Over…
Some Residents of Navrongo Constituency in the Upper East Region have registered displeasure with what they described as a ‘disrespect to their royal chief His Royal Majesty, Pe Dennis Aniakwa Balinia Addah Asagpaare II According to them, it is important for the people in charge of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) protocol in the Region and Navrongo in particular to see that, Navrongo has a paramount chief. They said, there is a need for the President, his vice and government officials to follow the appropriate custom by way of coming to greet the landlord (chief) on arrival or even before departure. According to some of the aggrieved people in the area, for close to five years since the NPP assumed office, neither President Akufo-Addo nor his Vice saw the need to greet Navropio each time they visited Navrongo for one programme or the other. “Whoever is closer to the Presidency and mean well for the NPP and Dr. Bawumia should draw their attention to the fact that, if the cracks in the Constituency will continue to steal basic ethics and cultural sensibleness from them, then, they should take a second look at the future of the Party in Navrongo”. They said: “the usual humility might have made him resend his decision not to receive any visitor brought by either Upper East Regional NPP Executive or the Constituency Executive as long as they continue to undermine the skin and Navrongo after the ethically conscious MCE accompanied by Hon. Rita Asobayire to render an apology to the people of Navrongo, through his Royal Majesty, there is the need to set the record straight”. The former national Deputy Secretary of the Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Samuel Koku Anyidoho has said, former President John Dramani Mahama won the 2012 election based on late President John Evans Mills existing legacy. Apexnewsgh.com According to Mr. Anyidoho, at a time, Mr. Mahama has no merit to have won him an election in 2012 within 3 months. “When the man passed on, I serve you well, he won on the ticket of President Mills in 2012. He can never say anywhere that it took him 3 months to win the election. It was as a result of what President Mills did and he won. I served him well”. He said “John Mahama did not win the 2012 election on his own merit, he has no merit. That election was won because of what President Mills did in the three and half years and Mahama could not have done anything in three months. It was won on the legacy of John Evan Atta mills”. Mr. Anyidoho was responding to his recent petition to the police over an allegation suggesting he has hand in the death of his boss John Evans Atta-Mills 10 years ago. Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Atta-Mills Institute Samuel Koku Anyidoho says police has acknowledged receiving his petition to investigate the threat and allegation suggesting he had hand in the passing of his former boss John Evans Atta-Mills 10 years ago. Apexnewsgh.com When asked, whether he is afraid of his life, the reason he reported the issue for police to investigate? Mr. Anyidoho responded: “Is not about fear, to what extent can I be afraid? But when people just decide to abuse new media and try to call me names and then go pointedly that I am responsible for the death of John Evans Atta-Mills what else can I do?” He asked “You see, when the President passed on 10 years ago, we hear a lot of stories; I took him in the hospital in the boot of my car, he was sent to a female ward, he was sent to children’s ward and those ones you can let them pass. But, when somebody pointedly close at me, in the name of John Dramani Mahama and sadly, anytime these people go wayward, they do it in name of John Dramani Mahama and he has never come out to say, don’t do this in my name. Well, that’s it, I have gone to the police”. He stressed Mr. Anyidoho allegedly accused former President John Dramani Mahama of behind his accusers to call him names for nothing wrong done. Well, I can pardon him, if he says he doesn’t know about it. But consistently, nobody has done this in the name of Kwame Nkrumah”. NDC demands President Akufo-Addo to end the attack on free expression
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed worry over what they described as an attack on free expression, as they called on President Akufo-Addo to end it with immediate effect. Their call came after the arrest and detention of Accra FM’s Kwabena Bobie Ansah on Thursday night, 10 February 2022 at about 10:00 pm. According to them, “The NDC assures the despotic regime of Akufo-Addo, that we shall not relent in our effort both within and outside Parliament to stop the introduction e-levy,” the statement captured. Below is the full statement: President Akufo-Addo Must end the Attack on Free Expression Now The National Democratic Congress has observed with utter dismay, the calculated onslaught on media freedom and free speech by the Nana Akufo Addo government, which is increasingly showing dictatorial and autocratic tendencies. The past few weeks have seen a dramatic upsurge in the criminalization of free speech as well as unbridled attack on the journalism profession. There has been sharp deterioration in the expression of the right to free speech under the Presidency of a personality whose claim to fame as a human rights activist, was his work on the repeal of the Criminal Libel Law when he was an Attorney General. Recent events however, exposes duplicity and hypocrisy Mr. Akufo Addo’s. In short President Akufo Addo speaks from both sides of his mouth. The nation is yet find answers to the barbaric murder of an investigative journalist, Mr. Ahmed Suale, following his expose of the involvement of the President and his Vice in the Kwesi Nyantekyi – bribery scandal. The peoples demand for justice has remained an illusion. In the last few weeks, four journalists have suffered police brutalities and in some cases unfair judicial conviction. Journalist are being cowed into silence through the atmosphere of oppression and harassment. It is the modus operandi of autocrats and despots to create an atmosphere of fear to silent the voice of opposition and free speech. In all these the police appear complicit, aiding the oppressors to hound citizens of Ghana. Last week a Media Generale Radio and TV presenter, Captain Smart was in a Rambo-style dragged into detention, after he had been granted bail by a court. Last Tuesday another radio presenter, Oheneba Boamah Bennie of Power Fm/TV XYZ was incarcerated for statements he allegedly made against the President. A civil society activist, Mr Mensah Thompson was arrested, detained, sent to court on criminal charges, granted bail and yet again detained all for being critical of President Akufo-Addo. Another radio presenter Mr Kwabena Bobie Ansah of Accra Fm, was last night arrested and detained in connection with a story of looting of state lands by Mrs. Rebecca Akufo Addo. We consider the escalation of arrests and harassments as an attempt by the Akufo Addo junta to put fear in Ghanaians opposed to e-levy and douse the impact of the massive ‘Yentua Demonstration’ held in Accra yesterday. The NDC assures the despotic regime of Akufo-Addo, that we shall not relent in our effort both within and outside Parliament to stop the introduction e-levy. We are deeply worried by the loud silence of the Moral Society, large section of Civil Society and rather surprisingly the Ghana Journalists Association, whose members are under siege. We take this opportunity to call on these groups to speak out against the blatant acts of repression being perpetrated against our young democracy. These groups should take note of the rising political instability in the sub-region and speak out now and not wait to until matters get out of hands before they host series of belated interventions and seminars on what went wrong.
