IMANI Ghana and Security Expert Refile Suit Against Executive Over Security Agency Appointments

IMANI Ghana and Security Expert Refile Suit Against Executive Over Security Agency Appointments IMANI Ghana and security expert Kwasi Aning have filed a new lawsuit challenging the appointment of heads of security agencies by the executive. This comes after withdrawing an earlier suit filed at the Supreme Court, which was struck out on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. The plaintiffs are seeking a declaration that the President lacks the authority to terminate the appointment of heads of security agencies unless there is proven misconduct or misbehavior. They argue that the Constitution guarantees the tenure of these office holders, and the President’s power to appoint new heads is limited to instances where the previous office holder has died, retired, or is incapacitated. The suit specifically targets the offices of the Chief Fire Officer, Inspector General of Police, Director General of Prisons Service, and Comptroller General of Immigration Service. The plaintiffs contend that the President’s actions violate the constitutional rights of these office holders and perpetuate a concerning trend of compelled terminations by new governments. The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, expressed disappointment at the withdrawal of the initial suit, noting that it had garnered significant public interest. However, the plaintiffs’ counsel, Paa Joe Akuamoah Boateng, explained that the withdrawal was necessary to refile the case in light of new developments. The refiling of the suit highlights the ongoing debate about the limits of executive power and the protection of constitutional rights in Ghana. The plaintiffs’ demands for a consequential order to restrain the President from dismissing or removing security agency heads without due process have significant implications for the rule of law and democratic governance in the country. Over 80% of Ghanaians Prefer Dutch Passport to Ghanaian PhD, Survey Reveals

A recent survey conducted on Twitter by Oliver Barker Vormawor has shown that an overwhelming 81% of Ghanaians prefer having a Dutch passport to a PhD from Ghana. Apexnewsgh reports The poll, which garnered 13,721 votes, comes on the heels of a controversial statement made by Kofi Gabs, a Ghanaian social media personality living in the Netherlands. Gabs had stated in a viral video that his Dutch passport holds more practical value than a PhD from Ghana, citing his seamless experience obtaining a US visa through the ESTA app. He argued that the benefits of Dutch citizenship outweigh the prestige of a Ghanaian PhD, sparking a mixed reaction from the Ghanaian community. While some defended the value of advanced degrees from Ghana, many others criticized Gabs’ comments. The survey results, however, suggest that a significant majority of Ghanaians share Gabs’ sentiment, prioritizing the practical advantages of a Dutch passport over the academic achievement of a PhD from Ghana. Electoral Commission Denies Allegations of Bias Towards NPP

The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted claims that it is acting in the interest of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the December 7 general elections. Apexnewsgh reports The commission’s decision to restrict political party agents from observing the voter transfer exercise due to violent clashes at some centers sparked accusations of collusion with the NPP from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama. However, after reconsideration, the EC reversed its directive, allowing political party agents to observe the vote transfer exercise. In a statement, the EC clarified that its initial decision was made to ensure national peace and security, not to shield its work from scrutiny or promote a particular political party’s interest. The commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and fairness, stating that its decisions are made without partisan considerations and apply equally to all political parties and stakeholders. The EC urged the public to disregard statements suggesting bias, emphasizing that “this is not true.” The commission’s assurance aims to maintain public trust and ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
