In a public declaration ceremony held at the University for Development Studies (UDS) Guest House Conference Hall in Accra, Rev Dr Worlanyo announced his candidacy as an independent candidate for the presidential elections on December 7, 2024.
Speculation about his potential candidacy had been circulating in the media for several weeks prior to this announcement.
Dr Worlanyo revealed that he would soon release his manifesto, marking the beginning of a series of campaign activities. He expressed confidence in his ability to secure ballot access in all constituencies by December 2024. While independent candidates have historically struggled to gain significant support in Ghana’s presidential elections, Dr Worlanyo remained optimistic about his prospects.
His campaign will be centered around the blue economy, with a focus on revolutionizing the aquaculture and commercial agriculture sectors using robotics and implementing cost-effective policies under a lean administration of 44 ministers. Dr Worlanyo, who also serves as the Executive Director of the Centre for Greater Impact Africa (CGIA), criticized past leaders for failing to utilize the country’s resources for the benefit of the masses and pledged to incorporate successful policies from Ghana’s history into his plans for the country’s development.
The announcement of Dr Worlanyo’s candidacy adds another layer of competition to an already intense general election battle. Known for his moral integrity and opposition to corruption, he received a warm reception from the crowd at the UDS Conference Hall. Particularly concerning was his proposal to create a “home-grown economy” by refining Ghana’s mineral and oil resources within the country, rather than exporting them for refinement.
Despite never having held public office, Dr Worlanyo has garnered a devoted following due to his advocacy for good governance in Africa and his criticism of government abuse of power and mismanagement of state resources. Through CGIA, he has consistently addressed national and continental issues, with a specific focus on the economy and governance.
If successful, Dr Worlanyo’s presidency would prioritize equality for all and an empowered citizenry responsible for shaping their own future. His candidacy aims to restore optimism for prosperity in Ghana by drawing on the vision of Ghana’s first President, Osagefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and other significant policies implemented by previous leaders.
