Mike Oquaye Jnr emerged victorious in the Dome Kwabenya constituency as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, unseating his long-time rival Sarah Adwoa Safo.

The polls, which took place on Saturday, January 27, 2024, saw a significant margin of victory for Oquaye.

The final vote count revealed that Mike Oquaye Jnr received 1,198 votes, while Sarah Adwoa Safo only garnered 328 votes. Sheela Oppong Sakyi secured 186 votes as well. Oquaye’s victory was celebrated by his supporters, marking the end of Adwoa Safo’s reign in the constituency.

Adwoa Safo’s defeat, however, did not come as a surprise due to mounting criticism over her extended absence from the constituency. She had been abroad for nearly a year, taking care of her ill child. This absence had prompted disappointment and frustration among her constituents, who felt neglected as she failed to fulfill her parliamentary duties.

Upon her return, Sarah Adwoa Safo issued an apology to her constituents, seeking their support to contest and represent them again in parliament in 2025. However, the election results indicate that her constituents have not forgiven her for abandoning them. The overwhelming support for Mike Oquaye Jnr reflects their dissatisfaction and the lack of trust in Adwoa Safo’s commitment to their needs and concerns.

With the victory of Mike Oquaye Jnr, a new era begins in the Dome Kwabenya constituency. As the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Oquaye will have the task of reconnecting with the constituents and addressing their issues, thus aiming to restore the faith of the people in their representative.

Meanwhile, Adwoa Safo faces the challenge of rebuilding her reputation and regaining the trust of her constituents before the next election cycle.
