President Akufo-Addo Emphasizes Ghana’s Commitment to Democracy and Tolerance of Dissenting Voices

During the 67th Independence celebration in Koforidua, President Akufo-Addo highlighted Ghana’s journey toward democracy and the importance of respecting differing opinions.

He acknowledged that Ghana had to work hard to establish its democratic system of governance, as it was not simply inherited at the time of independence.

The President emphasized the progress made in Ghana’s democratic practices, particularly in terms of conducting elections. He acknowledged that while the country still has room for improvement, each election under the 4th Republic has shown advancements. President Akufo-Addo also praised the country’s commitment to free speech and a vibrant media landscape as indicators of a functioning democracy.

However, he noted that there is still work to be done in elevating the quality of public discourse and ensuring the tolerance of opposing views. The President stressed the importance of using technology to improve the electoral process while being wary of its potential manipulation for spreading falsehoods.

President Akufo-Addo also highlighted the need for quality education for all Ghanaian children and young people. He pointed out the success of the Free Senior High School policy in removing financial barriers to education and increasing enrollment rates. The President emphasized the importance of equipping students with the skills needed to compete in the modern economy, particularly in the fields of Science and Technology.

In conclusion, President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to continue striving for excellence and not settle for mediocrity. He emphasized the importance of working towards a better future for the country, especially in addressing issues of poverty and injustice.
