In a bold move, the Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has announced plans to launch impeachment proceedings against President Akufo-Addo due to his refusal to sign the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.
The decision came after the president’s recent directive to the secretary not to send the bill to the Jubilee House, sparking outrage among MPs.
Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson strongly condemned the president’s actions, emphasizing the importance of upholding the country’s constitution. Dr Forson stood in solidarity with the Speaker of Parliament for suspending the approval process for ministerial nominees and warned the President that such actions would not be tolerated.
Speaking out against what he perceived as a breach of the constitution, Dr Forson hinted at the imminent impeachment proceedings, stating, “It is obvious that His Excellency the President has breached the constitution, and we will advise ourselves. In the coming days, don’t be surprised that we will begin impeachment proceedings against the President.”
The Minority’s stance reflects their unwavering commitment to protecting the constitution and rejecting any attempts to undermine it. With tensions running high, the future remains uncertain as the political landscape in Ghana continues to evolve.
