In a devastating turn of events, two individuals have lost their lives after drowning in a dam located in Kpikpira, a community in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region.
The incident took place on Saturday, March 23rd, 2024, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
According to Adam Asaana, the Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the tragedy unfolded when a girl accidentally fell into the dam.
In a courageous attempt to rescue her, a young boy, known for his swimming abilities, jumped in to help. However, as he focused on saving the girl, her father also jumped in to assist, diverting the boy’s attention. Tragically, the boy managed to save the girl’s father but ended up drowning himself in the process.
Simon Moyom Laar, the assembly member of the area, expressed his frustration and sorrow over the incident, labeling it as unfortunate. The bodies of the deceased were later recovered from the water and handed over to the police for further procedures.
The news of the tragic incident brought together hundreds of mourners, including community leaders, chiefs, and residents from neighboring areas, to pay their respects and offer support to the grieving families.
The community of Kpikpira is left reeling from the loss of two of its members, a stark reminder of the dangers posed by water bodies, especially during the rainy season.
However, the said dam was constructed by World Vision to the community.
