Former President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has praised Okada riders for their ingenuity in creating employment opportunities for themselves and their families. Apexnewsgh reports
He acknowledged that their initiative has helped to reduce the unemployment rate in Ghana, which would have otherwise skyrocketed to 25% if they were not operating.
Mahama assured the Okada riders that under his leadership, their operations would be legalized, and they would no longer be considered illegal. “When we come into government, we will legalize Okada. So, on January 7th, 2025, when we are sworn in, it marks the beginning of your freedom,” he promised.
The former President noted that when he left office in 2016, the unemployment rate was 8.5%, but under the current administration, it has risen to 14.7%. He attributed the difference to the entrepreneurial spirit of Okada riders, who have created their own employment opportunities.
Mahama’s promise to legalize Okada operations aims to further empower these entrepreneurs and recognize their contribution to Ghana’s economy.
