Akufo-Addo reminds outgoing appointees ban on vehicle takeover

As the end of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration approaches, a firm directive has been issued by the Office of the President concerning government vehicles. Apexnewsgh reports

This directive, established during his first term in 2020, prohibits outgoing ministers, deputy ministers, regional ministers, and other political appointees from acquiring official government vehicles, emphasizing a commitment to accountability and prudent state resource management.

In a recent statement from the Communications Directorate at Jubilee House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo reiterated that no official vehicle will be made available for acquisition by appointees of the current government. The directive mandates that all ministers of state, deputy ministers, regional ministers, special assistants, and other political appointees—including those on statutory boards—must comply with this regulation.

With a compliance deadline set for Friday, January 3, 2025, any appointees in possession of government vehicles are instructed to return them to their respective ministry’s chief director. This marks a significant departure from the tradition upheld by previous administrations, which allowed appointees to purchase official vehicles after their tenure, following an evaluation by the State Transport Company Ltd.

President Akufo-Addo’s measures reflect a decisive move towards safeguarding public resources and enhancing transparency within government operations. By explicitly stating that no exceptions would be made, he underscores his administration’s dedication to rebuilding public trust in government processes.

Eugene Arhin, the director of communications for the Office of the President, expressed optimism that all appointees will adhere to this directive. He called for cooperation from everyone involved as the government transitions to the next administration, highlighting the importance of responsible management during this critical time.

The Office of the President anticipates a collaborative effort, creating a smooth handover that aligns with the administration’s commitment to integrity and transparency.
