In a decisive move to address the disruption caused by a recent nationwide teachers’ strike, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has cancelled the two-day mid-term break previously scheduled for November 5 and 6, 2026, for all basic schools across the country.
The announcement, made on Monday, November 2, directs schools to remain open and conduct normal academic activities on those days, reversing earlier plans for a short academic recess. The GES explained that the decision aims to recover valuable instructional hours lost when classrooms went silent during the nearly two-week strike by pre-tertiary teacher unions.
Parents, teachers, and students are now being urged to take note of the revised arrangement and ensure full attendance on Thursday and Friday, November 5 and 6. The Service emphasized the importance of maximizing teaching and learning time to neutralize the impact of the industrial action.
The strike, declared on September 25, 2026, by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), was rooted in unresolved issues over promotions, salary arrears, allowances, and working conditions. It was eventually suspended on October 9 after negotiations with key government agencies, paving the way for teachers to return to their classrooms from October 12.
In the wake of the disruption, concerns mounted about lost instructional time and its effects on the academic calendar. The GES, seeking to restore momentum and continuity in public schools, says the cancellation of the November mid-term break is part of broader efforts to ensure learning stays on track for Ghana’s basic school pupils.
