High Court Issues Bench Warrant for Akwatia MP’s Arrest

High Court in Koforidua has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, after convicting him of contempt of court. Apexnewsgh reports

This ruling stems from Kumi’s decision to defy an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn into office.

The court had earlier directed Kumi to refrain from assuming the parliamentary role until a legal dispute was resolved. However, he chose to disregard this order and took the oath of office in Parliament. This blatant disregard for the court’s directive led to his conviction for contempt of court.

Presiding Judge Justice Senyo Amedahe issued the bench warrant after Kumi failed to appear for sentencing. The judge rejected a letter from the Minority caucus, which claimed that Kumi was occupied with parliamentary duties and couldn’t attend court sessions.

This development marks a significant legal setback for the NPP MP, whose parliamentary position remains under contention. The bench warrant paves the way for Kumi’s arrest, and authorities are expected to enforce it to uphold the court’s ruling.
