Highlife Music Community Mourns Passing of George Darko

The highlife music community is reeling from the loss of another legendary figure as George Darko, affectionately known as the King of Burger Highlife, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

The cause of his death remains unknown, leaving fans and admirers shocked and saddened by the news.

George Darko rose to prominence during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, captivating audiences with his timeless highlife tunes that have become an integral part of Ghana’s music heritage. His exceptional skills as a guitarist, vocalist, composer, and songwriter set him apart, and his contributions to the highlife genre have left an indelible mark on the music scene.

In addition to his musical career, George Darko also held the esteemed title of Tufuhene of Akropong, under the stool name Nana Apem Darko I, showcasing his influence and leadership within his community.

His passing comes shortly after the loss of another highlife luminary, K.K Kabobo, who succumbed to liver disease a few days earlier at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). The deaths of both George Darko and K.K Kabobo represent a significant loss for Ghana’s music community, leaving behind a void that will be difficult to fill.

Despite their passing, the legacies of George Darko and K.K Kabobo will continue to resonate through their timeless music, ensuring that they are forever remembered and celebrated for their contributions to the rich tapestry of Ghanaian highlife.
