The Kumasi Traders Association has issued a stern warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, cautioning of potential electoral repercussions if abandoned markets across the Ashanti Region continue to be neglected. Apexnewsgh reports

In a unified declaration made public on Monday, May 6, 2024, prominent associations representing various market groups voiced their discontent with the government’s handling of market projects.

The traders, in a statement, expressed their concerns about the challenges they face in conducting business at their current locations. They highlighted that four markets – Krofrom Market, Mamponteng Market, Santasi Market, and Phase Two of the Kejetia Market – have been left abandoned, leaving their livelihoods severely affected by adverse weather conditions.

The traders lamented that each rainfall turns their marketplaces into muddy quagmires, while the scorching sun blankets the area in dust, making it difficult for them to operate effectively. They expressed disappointment over the lack of progress on the projects in the region, considered the stronghold of the governing NPP.

The traders appealed to the Asantehene to intervene in the situation and urged the contractor company to remove all barricades from the Kejetia second-phase projects.

They warned that if their demands are not met, they will join forces with the Asanteman Youth Union to demonstrate against the government. The traders emphasized that they will not hesitate to take matters into their own hands if their demands are not heard.

This warning from the Kumasi Traders Association serves as a clear signal to the NPP government that the neglect of abandoned markets in the Ashanti Region will have electoral repercussions. The traders’ demands for action and progress on market projects must be taken seriously to avoid any potential backlash.
