Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has vowed to abolish the 10% tax on betting, gaming, and lotteries if elected president. Apexnewsgh reports
The tax, introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration in August 2023, has been a contentious issue among young people who rely on gambling as a means of survival amidst the country’s economic challenges.
During a meeting at the Bukom Arena in Accra, Mahama empathized with the struggles of young people, stating, “Many are turning to betting to make ends meet due to the lack of job opportunities. I understand their situation, and that’s why we’ve pledged to abolish the betting tax if we come into office.”
Mahama acknowledged the government’s need for alternative revenue sources, but emphasized that the betting tax was a result of the IMF agreement.
He assured that his administration would find alternative revenue streams to compensate for the loss, prioritizing the livelihoods of young people who rely on gambling as a means of support. This promise has resonated with many young people, who see Mahama’s pledge as a commitment to their well-being and economic empowerment.
