Methodist Church of Ghana Plans Talks with President Akufo-Addo Over Sexual Human Rights Bill

The Methodist Church of Ghana has taken a proactive step to address the perceived delay in President Akufo-Addo’s signing into law of the Sexual Human Rights and Family Values Bill, 2021. Apexnewsgh reports

Led by the Presiding Bishop, Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, the church has announced plans to engage in direct discussions with President Akufo-Addo regarding the ongoing matter.

The issue of the bill’s signing has led to a simmering standoff between the President and the Speaker of Parliament, casting a shadow over the legislative process. President Akufo-Addo has indicated that he will only act on the bill once the Supreme Court rules on two legal challenges filed against its transmission to the presidency and subsequent signing.

In a retaliatory move, Speaker Alban Bagbin suspended the approval process for the President’s new ministerial nominees in response to a case filed by opposition MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor. However, the Supreme Court dismissed this case on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

Expressing hope for a positive outcome, Most Rev. Dr. Boafo stated during a news conference, “It is unanimous that Ghanaians are not in support of the activities of the LGBTQI+ community. We are planning to meet the President at the Jubilee House to dialogue on the best way forward.”

As the Methodist Church of Ghana gears up to engage with President Akufo-Addo on this crucial matter, the outcome of this anticipated meeting holds significance in the ongoing debate surrounding the Sexual Human Rights and Family Values Bill.
