The National Peace Council (NPC) has expressed deep regret over the recent disturbances in Bawku and Ejura, which resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property. Apexnewsgh reports
In a statement dated January 13, 2025, the NPC condemned the violence and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
The Council urged the people of Bawku and Ejura to remain calm and seek non-violent means of resolving their grievances. It also appealed to the Ghana Police Service to exercise restraint and professionalism in handling the situations.
The NPC acknowledged the sensitive nature of the incidents, particularly in Ejura, where a similar incident occurred in June 2021.
To address this, the Council assured the chiefs and people of Ejura that it would work with the Ashanti Regional Peace Council to engage stakeholders, including the youth and the police service, to ensure peaceful coexistence.
Similarly, the NPC assured the people of Bawku that it would revive the Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee, in collaboration with the Upper East Regional Office and other stakeholders, to ensure sustainable peace in the area.
This move is reminiscent of the Council’s previous efforts in Bawku, where dialogue and engagement led to the establishment of the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee, which facilitated peace in the area between 2013 and 2017.
