The nominees, Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, were submitted to the President by Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Essaba Torkornu, on the advice of the Judicial Council and in consultation with the Council of State.
The nominations come as two current Supreme Court judges, JSC Nii Ashie Kotey and JSC Mariama Owusu, prepare for retirement. The Speaker has referred the nominees to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report to the House.
The nomination process is a significant step in ensuring the continued integrity and effectiveness of the Supreme Court. The Appointments Committee will thoroughly vet the nominees, and their report will be presented to the House for further action.
The nominees’ expertise and experience will be crucial in shaping the future of Ghana’s judiciary. Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong bring a wealth of knowledge and insight to the bench, and their appointments are expected to strengthen the Supreme Court’s capacity to deliver justice and uphold the rule of law.
