A dramatic apology opened the day’s proceedings in Parliament on Friday, January 31, 2025, as Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, expressed remorse for the chaos that erupted during Thursday’s vetting session. Apexnewsgh reports
The tensions between Minority and Majority caucuses had reached a boiling point, resulting in disruptions, damage to parliamentary furniture, and widespread condemnation from Ghanaians.
The clashes occurred during the vetting of Health Minister-designate, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and Foreign Affairs Minister-designate, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Many criticized the MPs for their conduct, emphasizing that they are mandated to uphold the rule of law.
However, Ahiafor’s apology marked a turning point, as he assured Ghanaians of the Committee’s commitment to improving the country’s democracy. “What happened last night is totally unacceptable, and the committee wants to render an apology to the Speaker and the general public… We are committed to working to grow our democracy,” he stated.
This incident is not the first time the Appointments Committee has faced criticism for disorderly conduct. Previously, Ahiafor explained that the “disorderliness” during the vetting of the first three ministerial nominees was due to his inexperience as chair and the presence of new MPs unfamiliar with parliamentary procedures.
