“Aside the cost of the dialysis and medications which is expensive, these patients had to travel 2-to-3 times a week with a caregiver to Tamale for the dialysis, this puts an extra burden on their families because some just had to stop working in order to be able to travel almost every other day for dialysis”. This was according to Dr. Emmanuel Akatibo when he started the campaign for a dialysis center for the Regional Hospital.

However, it appears the wonderful campaign by Dr. Emmanuel Nsobila Akatibo, a Physician Specialist with the Upper East Regional hospital has yielded massive results.

On the 2nd day of March 2023, well-meaning residents of the Upper East Region came out in their numbers to contribute their quota towards the said dialysis initiative at the regional hospital.

The Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu during his speech said: “Today is a new day in the life of the Regional Hospital. It is a day we have chosen for ourselves to raise funds for the establishment of a 24-hour state-of-the-art Hemodialysis to provide services for clients in the region”.

According to him, it is an opportunity for stakeholders of the region: “The challenge before us today is huge; yet so is an opportunity for us to stop being victims of circumstances. It is an opportunity for us as stakeholders of the region to ensure that Hemodialysis services are provided to a person with a renal condition which for a time now has become more prevalent than ever”.
“It is acceptable that in today’s modern Ghana, we still have to travel to Tamale Teaching Hospital and other tertiary Health facilities outside the region to access the services of dialysis. This is highly unbearable, avoidable and profoundly unjust”. Minister Yakubu said.
However, the regional Minister on behalf of REGSEC and MMDCs in the region pledged Ghc 80,000.
