Talensi Assembly members hints of demonstrating against Earl International (Gold) GH Ltd over their adamant on road construction

Talensi Assembly members have hinted they will be hitting the street of Talensi District of the Upper East Region to demonstrate against Shaanxi Mining now rebranded to Earl International (Gold) GH Ltd. According to the Assembly members, their planned demonstration is scheduled to commence from Sheaga on Friday, April 28, 2023, to the Earl International (Gold) GH Ltd entrance gate. The Talensi Presiding member and the Assembly for Gari/Gbani electoral area John Millim, told Apexnewsgh.com that “there is this road that links from Tongo to the mining area and since they came, they have used the road and most of the culverts have broken down as a result of their heavy-duty machines. We resolved last year at the assembly and asked them to work on the road they agree to do it and later on, we send them reminders in a written form and they haven’t done what we asked them to do. So, we think demonstration is the only language they understand”. he stressed However, when Apexnewsgh.com contacted Earl International Public Relations Officer Ebenezer Bognaab, he confirmed the demand made by members of the Talensi District Assembly. He described the demand for the road construction as a ‘genuine concern’ raised by the Assembly members. “These are genuine concerns they are expressing”. Earl International PRO admits He told Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen during an interview that, the company has seen the construction of the road as part of their cooperate responsibility to the Talensi people. Insisting that the company Earl International is considering such a demand. “So, as a mining company as part of our cooperate responsibility for the fact that we also used the same road. When they wrote to us, we responded, they send a resolution and we responded to the resolution and they send a reminder. So, we have been engaging the district assembly over this issue, and is a genuine issue and management is currently considering it”. Responding to the aggrieve assembly members who were of the view that the company isn’t cooperating with them on their demand, the PRO said: “It is not true that we are not cooperating, we had a meeting with the DCE in his office, we had a discussion with him on this issue and we are always ready for engagement. You know, it has to do with roads and road construction is not as easy as you know. So, as a company, we have to organize ourselves because we have also some other plans too. So, as I said earlier, we are considering it. Very soon we will start work on the road”. He reacted Roads in Talensi are so deplorable to the extent, people easily questioned the contribution of a mining firm such as Shaanxi now Earl International since its operation in the Talensi district. The company has always been in the news for not performing its responsibility as a mining company that has migrated from small-scale mining and now operating as a large-scale mining company. Most citizens from the Talensi District living in both home and abroad have pointed hands on their leaders and more especially those in authority for their district’s underdeveloped predicaments. The Assembly members want the mining company to consider constructing the road from Tongo Hospital junction straight to Sheaga, Gbani, and across Datoko. Talensi: ‘BLACK WEDNESDAY’ solidifies by TAMCI to remember those who lost their lives in the mining jungle

Talensi Mining Communities Initiative (TAMCI)  formerly known as TEMCI a Civil Society Organization fighting for the interest of vulnerable miners in the Talensi District has marked every January 23 as a ‘BLACK DAY’ for the people of Talensi and Upper East Region at large.   This follows as a remembrance and an opportunity to mourn the death of the 16 illustrious youths of the area who lost their lives in the hustle field on the ugly day of January 23, 2019. To mark the day, every member of the organization was seen either wearing black or red which signifies a mourning dress code for persons believed to be entangled by a terrible tragedy. Reading with a painful heart, one of the leading members of TAMCI Albert Naa said, “It is with heavy hearts that we have gathered here to solemnly reflect and commemorate the death of the 16 industrious sons of our land who were gruesomely murdered exactly four years ago today. And also to remember all those who have died or have been maimed before and after that fateful incident in 2019, through the negligence of some mining companies in Talensi and to renew our demands and call for compensation for the families of the victims”. According to TAMCI, when gold was found in large quantities in Talensi, they drummed and danced out their heart with joy. they had high hopes that the free natural gift to them will bring employment, community development, peace and unity. They thought the livelihoods of their people will be improved. But, little did they know, that their youth was going to be sacrificed on the altar of foreign profiteering agenda with support from local turncoats. The group says, “…as we continue to call for justice in the form of compensation for the victims, we encourage mining companies both small and large scale to take Regulation 2012, (L.I. 2177) and (L.I. 2183) of the Minerals and Mining Act 703 (Act 2006) seriously in their operations. These regulations detail how explosives should be handled and used in mining, and the health and safety precautions that must be adhered to”. The group also believes that the Mineral Commission who are mandated to make sure there is transparency in every mining community not helping matters in the area “It is our belief that if the Minerals Commission had been proactive and not reactive in its regulatory mandate, we would not have lost 16 industrious sons in the manner in which we lost them. They would still be with us today breaking bread as we plan the future of our collective destinies together. And the hardships their wives, children, and other dependents are going through today would have been averted or reduced”. They stressed “The minerals commission’s investigation into the incident in 2019, found Shaanxi guilty of various counts and so fined them USD50,000.00 but failed to prescribe any compensation for the bereaved families”. “The surviving dependents of the victims are left on their own. They live in hopelessness and in penury since their only hope of survival were gruesomely taken away from them 4 years ago. For this cause, we have made several attempts to draw the attention of duty bearers to the error of not prescribing any compensation for the dependents of the 2019 victims. We have demonstrated, held press conferences educated community members, and engaged duty bearers. But all these have fallen on deaf ears. This indifference from relevant government officials and traditional authorities puts all of us at risk as it emboldens mining companies to go scot-free in their recklessness and creates the impression that, TALENSI LIVES DON’T MATTER. “As we have always done, we will continue to observe this Black Wednesday event every year and use the event to remind duty bearers of their sworn duties to protect the interest of Ghana and its people. That all are equal in the eyes of the law and also to hold mining companies accountable for their actions. We know the road will be muddy and rough but we will get there. Heaven knows how”. They noted Meanwhile, some of the family victims present at the commemoration event shared some of their painful experiences as they called on the government and authorities responsible to come to their aid. Talensi District: We cannot have gold and don’t have portable drinking water, good road, and facilities—Solomon TTB

The Talensi Constituency Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a resident of Talensi Solomon TTB have registered his displeasure following the happenings in the Talensi District a place well known across the world as a land blessed with natural resources such as Gold, rosewood and Upper quarry. Speaking with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh.com on his flagship development programme dubbed “SPEAKOUT UPPER EAST” on Monday, September 19, 2022. Mr. Solomon shared an interesting experience that many people do not know about. According to him, for most people who freely travel back home when they are visited with a heavy downpour, in the case of Talensi, is a different thing altogether because the road is very deplorable. He said: “when it rains, people from the community don’t want to return home, when it rains, it affects teachers, it affects farmers, it affects everyone including those sitting on these natural resources themselves”. “We cannot have Gold in Talensi and our road is very bad, We cannot have Gold in Talensi and our health facilities are very deplorable, We cannot have Gold in Talensi and we don’t have portable drinking water, We cannot have Gold in Talensi and youth are unemployed, we cannot have Gold in Talensi and our youth are engaging in certain social miscreants No, it is time for us to engage the mining companies we don’t have to fight with them. Fighting will never resolve the matter”. He stressed Source: Apexnewsgh.com|Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen|Ghana For publication please kindly contact us on 0256336062 or Email: apexnewsgh@gmail.com

Talensi: Ghana Mines workers Union with Earl International Group Ghana Gold Limited to kick start talks ahead of 2023 salaries

Ghana Mines workers Union with the Earl International Group Ghana Gold Limited a large-scale mining entity operating in the Talensi district of the Upper East Region will be meeting to discuss issues regarding their 2023 salaries and some other working conditions on Thursday, September 22, 2022. Apexnewsgh.com report The branch Union Secretary of Ghana mine workers in the area Solomon Yintota made the revelation during his engagement with Apexnewsgh.com on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, following an alleged accusation of workers of the company have not been treated well by their employer Earl International. Earlier, in an engagement on Apexnewsgh.com flagship programme dubbed “SPEAKOUT UPPER EAST” Solomon TTBa resident of the area has alleged that workers are been treated unfairly by management. “I am telling you that those people are more and less like they are working by day. They are working by day because, the moment you go to work they will mark your pay for the day, but the day you did not go to work, that day they won’t mark and you won’t get anything. And there is no mining firm in this country that is doing by day unless you are a casual worker or they are engaging you to come and do construction work for them”. He said However, responding to the comment made by Solomon TTB, the branch Union Secretary Mr. Yintota, partially admitted that is true that workers of Earl International don’t receive equal payment like other workers in various mining companies. “Am aware that their salaries are more than us and that where we are all struggling to see how we can catch up and they are been paid in dollars and we are been paid in cedis. But now we have been paid in cedis converted to dollar rate. As I told you, we are going to discuss 2023 salaries in dollars and that is the only thing I think we are lacking from other mining companies. Besides that, in the mining industry, the way our safety and other thing was, we were not like other miners. But because they have moved to a large scale, safety has improved. We are not saying we are perfect like other mining companies but we are also far behind where we came from and we are better somehow now”. Talensi Gold: Some of us are seeking political leadership because things are not done right—Solomon TTB

The Talensi Constituency Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Solomon TTB has revealed that some of the Talensi youth are seeking political leadership today because things are not done right with the natural resources given to them by God.He made the revelation during an engagement with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh.com on his flagship development programme dubbed “SPEAKOUT UPPER EAST” on Monday, September 19, 2022. He made the revelation during an engagement with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh.com on his flagship development programme dubbed “SPEAKOUT UPPER EAST” on Monday, September 19, 2022. According to the Constituency Secretary, some of the youth are seeking political leadership, not because of certain things but because some of the things are not done right, “if things are done why should we be seeking political leadership?“We cannot have Gold in Talensi and our road is very bad, We cannot have Gold in Talensi and our health facilities are very deplorable, We cannot have Gold in Talensi and we don’t have portable drinking water, We cannot have Gold in Talensi and youth are unemployed, We cannot have Gold in Talensi and our youth are engaging in certain social miscreants No, it is time for us to engage the mining companies we don’t have to fight with them. Fighting will never resolve the matter”. He also blamed traditional leaders in the area for contributing to the current challenges affecting the plight of the people in the various mining communities in the Talensi district. “Traditional leaders have failed us, if you have chiefs, Tindaanas, the opinion leaders coming out together with a blueprint, a memorandum of understanding engaging the communities together, bringing the mining companies on a round table discussion to look at how employment is done, how they are procuring their things who are the people they are giving the contract to, youth that they are employing, whether they obeying the mining safety, are they giving royalties? If they are giving royalties, how do we share them? These are things traditionally we have to look at”. “We have a District Chief Executive (DCE), He is from the community, he knows the people very well, he has contact with each of the mine. And for that matter, once you are a government appointee and you are representing the people, your core mandate is to see how you will help our people to be supported. So, when the government wants to end their so-called illegal mining I would have thought that EPA, Mineral Commission, The lands and Natural Resources Minister, Regional Minister, and DCE would consider training these people on how not to cause harm to the environment and atmosphere and even how to mine without destroying our water body by way of giving them a place to mine under the community mining. Sincerely speaking, EPA and mineral Commission have disappointed Talensi and I must be frank with you. In fact, people are of the view and alleging that they come to take monies” he alleged Source: Apexnewsgh.com|Ghana For publication please kindly contact us on 0256336062 or Email: apexnewsgh@gmail.com

UER: Chief empowering women in his traditional area, says the men aren’t happy

Chief of Balungu a community in the Talensi traditional area of the Upper East Region Naba John Attia said, he believes giving support to women in his traditional area is a better way of contributing meaningfully to households than supporting men. He told apexnewsgh.com during an exclusive interview “When I came, I saw it was better working with women than men, I support them a lot. Even if there is work to be given to the women and the men, I always give it to women to be able to get something for the family”. “Some people from outside heard the way am doing with the women and they came to the palace to ask me some questions and the last question they asked me was whether the women respect their husbands and my reply to them was a capital ‘NO’. A lot of them don’t respect their husbands again because they now have the power”. He confirmed “So, the women here don’t joke with me. If you want, let’s just go to the bush now, some of them are farming five acres of maize, three acres of maize, four acres of maize, and groundnut. Just go and see the men, some of them can’t farm. So, the women now know what to do”. Asking whether the men are happy with the support and empowerment he the chief is giving to the women? Naba John Attia responded no, the men are not happy with me, but I won’t mind them. Sighting some examples, the chief said: “here we do some contributions for funeral issues and some other problems. If a woman has a problem, they are able to contribute up to Two Thousand two hundred Ghana cedis (Ghc 2,200.00) for the one who has the problem to go and solve her problem. The men, even Twenty Ghana Cedis (Gh 20.00) can’t contribute. And we have a funeral donation we do monthly, am with the women’s group and the men’s group as well. When my father died, the men I only had One Hundred and Twenty Ghana cedis (Ghc120.00) but the women gave me Nine hundred Ghana cedis (Ghc 900.00)”. ”If you have Ghc100, the women are supposed to take Ghc70 whiles the men take Ghc30 because if the woman takes Ghc30, she would also cook from there and the man will also eat. So, that means the man took everything. I always fight with the men because of this. So the woman must take Ghc70.00” However, Naba John Attia believes women know how to multiply the little they are left to survive with whiles the men know how to squander the one they are left to survive with. Tongraan Kugbilsong Nanlebetang like my matter because am dynamic—Balungu chief to critics

Chief of Balungu a community in the traditional area in the Upper East Region Naba John Attia (Wmaribilsonga Niitinga/Putisonne maaletinga) has said, the paramount Chief of the Talensi traditional area Tongraan Kugbilsong Nanlebetang delegates him to most of the activities as his representative, because he has seen him as a dynamic person. However, clearing the controversy surrounding his frequent closeness with the paramount chief of the area, following residents taught that there must be a tangible reason why the paramount chief of the Talensi traditional feel so comfortable delegating the chief of Balungu traditional area mostly ahead of some other sub-chiefs as his representative. Meanwhile, responding to the said question during an exclusive engagement with Apexnewsgh.com, Naba John Attia explained, that he is loved by the paramount chief because he sees him as a dynamic man who always stands by the truth. “The love is because when I see the truth, I tell the truth. So, as a regent people will take my report to the paramount Chief and when he asked me about what was against me, I said yes I had done it, if it is no, I said no I had not done it. Actually, as a regent for 3 years, all regents were selling lands, make your investigation and you would find out. But for the 3 years as a regent, the paramount chief didn’t hear anything about me selling land”. Talensi District added to Agenda 111 after Apexnews-Gh report

Indeed, good journalism gets results. It is exciting to note that few months after Apexnewsgh.com reported the regrettable condition bedeviling the Talensi district hospital in the Upper East Region, the Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu has revealed that the Talensi District has been added as part of the government policy known as ‘Agenda 111’. On Thursday, November 18, 2021, Apexnewsgh.com reported an article headlined: “Talensi District: A land of gold without good functioning district hospital and roads” In that investigative report published about the struggling Talensi district hospital, below were some of the interesting facts bedeviling the hospital and as well putting the lives of children, youth, aged and the people of Talensi in serious danger. 1. Talensi District Hospital is battling an infrastructure crisis 2. Talensi District Hospital operates from separate locations 3. Female and male wards were together and the ward could only take 8 beds 4. Children’s Ward could take only 9 beds, especially with 5 beds and 4 cots 5. When patients are 10, Talensi district hospital will be forced to discharge a patient on admission to pave way for others. 6. The road leading to the hospital is bad, causing staff, and patients to fall including pregnant women. Then, officials at the facility who narrated their plights and predicaments about the hospital said they wished they were part of the government agenda 111 which was about to benefit 8 districts in the Upper East Region. Meanwhile, giving an account of their predicament at the hospital, the official said: “We don’t have the infrastructure, the male and female wards were together, and we have to separate the male and the female and where we are using could only take 8 beds. So, if we have more than 8 patients we have to either move them to the emergency or have to discharge some of our patients so that we make way for others. If we could get a big ward that could help with about 30 because we do surgery and when we do surgery, the patient has to stay but, because of the limited number, we can’t do more surgery”. She narrated However, then the Talensi District Health Director Madam Estella Abazesi confirmed the plight of the hospital when Apexnewsgh.com called on her for more clarifications. According to her, “In terms of logistics to build it up to the capacity of a district hospital, we are lacking. We do not run all the compliment of a district hospital, is not all the services that we render”. However, 7months after our report, the good news is that the Talensi district has been considered to be a beneficiary of the policy. The project was to ensure that Ghanaians nationwide have access to quality healthcare services and with the National Health Insurance Scheme, boost the provision of healthcare infrastructure and financial accessibility to healthcare. Agenda 111 project was launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa-Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, August 17, 2021.
