Movement for Change Leader and former Trades Minister, Alan Kyerematen, has rejected promises made by New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, regarding 100% Ghanaian ownership of mineral resources, labelling it as populist propaganda. Apexnewsgh reports
During his campaign tour of the Bono region, Vice President Bawumia pledged to ensure full Ghanaian ownership of mineral resources if elected. However, Kyerematen, an independent presidential candidate, refuted this promise in an interview with the Chronicle Newspaper.
According to Kyerematen, Article 257 (6) of the 1992 Constitution already vests all mineral resources within Ghana and its territorial waters in the President on behalf of the Ghanaian people. He emphasized that Ghanaians legally own 100% of their mineral resources, making Bawumia’s pledge misleading and populist.
“Ghanaians already own 100% of their mineral resources by law,” Kyerematen highlighted. “The impression being created by the Vice President that he will make Ghanaians own 100% of their natural resources is misleading and amounts to populist propaganda.”
Kyerematen’s rebuke of Bawumia’s promise raises questions about the feasibility and sincerity of the NPP flagbearer’s campaign pledges, and highlights the need for fact-based political discourse.
