I don’t have any criticisms about Chinese involvement in the Ghanaian economy, I see them as friends–Akufo-Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has lauded the Chinese for their immense contribution to Ghana’s economy. According to President Akufo-Addo, he sees the Chinese as friends irrespective of how the West views the Asian giant. In a new report released by the International Monetary Fund, it says the Chinese are likely to take hold of Ghana’s resources and power revenue as the West African cocoa producer has defaulted in paying some $1.9 billion owed to the People’s Republic of China. Ghana’s total debt to China is climbing to about $5 billion and most of it has gone into roads and infrastructure projects. Meanwhile, addressing congregations at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha, Mr. Akufo-Addo stated: “I don’t have any criticisms about Chinese involvement in the Ghanaian economy”. “They [Chinese] have been very helpful”, he praised, pointing out: “It’s a matter of controversy in the West”. “For us”, the Ghanaian leader noted, “they have been friends, and, in terms of difficulty, they have proven to be a strong partner”. Akufo-Addo’s ‘yo- yo’ economy is not good for business – John Mahama
Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticised the current government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for failing to create a business-friendly environment. According to the former president, the government has rather created an unstable environment that cripples business growth. “We are in competition in our sub-region for investment, both domestic and foreign and so we must create the environment that allows businesses to thrive and grow and one of the things will be to have a stable economy. This yo-yo economy that we have, boom and burst, boom and burst is not good for business. “And so the last time we went into an IMF program I said this must be the last time we go. We must manage our economy prudently so that it is predictable, it creates an environment where businesses are not surprised by new government policies in terms of taxes and so on and so forth, by declaration in the value of the currency and all that,” Mr Mahama said during his presentation as the keynote address at the 7th Ghana CEOs Summit in Accra on Monday, May 22, 2023. The former president further criticised the government over what he said is a lack of preparedness in the government’s recently approved International Monetary (IMF) economic support program. Last week, the IMF approved a $3 billion economic recovery facility for Ghana, which has faced severe economic pressure since late 2019. The government largely attributes the economic challenges to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine War, but the opposition believes the situation is due to mismanagement of the economy by the government. According to Mr Mahama, unlike the IMF program initiated during his leadership, the recently approved program failed to undertake proper prior reforms by the government, making it a badly negotiated deal. —Ghanaweb—
Keep your promise and fire Ofori-Atta after successful IMF deal – Ablakwa to Akufo-Addo
Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is urging President Akufo-Addo to keep his promise to Ghanaians and fire his cousin, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta after cinching the $3billiion IMF deal. It is recalled that the Majority caucus in Parliament called for Mr Ofori-Atta to be sacked but after meeting the President, the caucus in a statement dated 26th October 2022, revealed that the President asked them to stand down until Ghana’s negotiations with the IMF were concluded. On Wednesday, 17 May 2023, the executive board of the IMF approved the $3 billion bailout allowing for an immediate disbursement of about $600 million. Following the successful conclusion of the deal, Mr Ablakwa is asking if President Nana Akufo-Addo will consider the request of his members of Parliament. In a Facebook post, the North Tongu MP said “After an embarrassing IMF U-Turn deal, Ghanaians expect President Akufo-Addo to keep his promise by firing his cousin, Ken Ofori-Atta — who is now widely regarded as Ghana’s most disastrous Finance Minister.” “Will the President attempt in this instance to be a man of his word”? he quizzed. Prior to this new reminder, several calls on the President from a section of Ghanaians and civil society organisations for Mr Ofori-Atta to be fired due to the difficult economic conditions fell of deaf ears. —Classfm—
The economy is in a poor state, we must learn a lesson from the hardship we are going through —John Dramani
Former President John Dramani Mahama has said the economy is a very poor state due to the government’s excessive rate of borrowing. According to the former President, all efforts by him to advise the government on the way forward have not been listened to. “Our economy is in a poor state, they were borrowing at an excessive rate, we drew their attention to it and they asked us to shut up and that is because the Finance Minister is the cousin of the President and because he makes a commission for every dollar he borrowed for Ghana, we goes and bring a loan his bank Data bank are the ones who are the brokers and they make a commission from the loan”. So, if you have a situation like this, are you surprised that we can’t pay our debt? Because of excessive borrowing? He said: “80 of their MPs signed that petition and asked the President to remove this Finance Minister because he is incompetent up till today, he is the one managing our finances, taking pensioners’ monies, refusing to pay bondholders. Is not fair, and that is Ghanaians say NDC should come back and that is why I am certain by the grace of God, Isha Allah that NDC is going to win the 2024 election”. He advised the people of the Upper East Region to be mindful of those who will come knocking on their door for votes. “We must learn a lesson from the hardship we are going through. In the future, if somebody comes and says try me again, just tell the person to get out of here. We don’t need to try me try me again, we need experienced hands. They said NPP we have the men, we have the men, not knowing some area boys …. where are the men? “NDC has the human resource to run this country, pound for pound if you compare NDC ministers and their output to what we have seen under this NPP Administration, they are not a match at all, no challenger. So Ghanaians are asking to come back and take the country and we can tell that the opportunity has opened up. He stressed
President Akufo-Addo (Left) Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of Trades Union Congress Ghana (TUC-Ghana) (Right)
May God grant me the wisdom to achieve that outcome” Akufo-Addo prayed as he assured Organized Labour of peace resolution in Bawku
Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of Trades Union Congress Ghana (TUC-Ghana) during his speech at the just-ended 2023 National May Day celebration has revealed, that the concluding decision to host the 2023 Workers Day Celebration in the Upper East Region was to show solidarity with workers and all the people in this region. The General Secretary lamented that the ethnic conflict in the region is having a devastating impact on lives, property, businesses, jobs, schooling, health care, and social and religious activities, particularly in the Bawku District. “Mr. President, the leadership of Organized Labour selected Upper East Region for this year’s National May Day Parade for two main reasons. The first reason is that we wanted to have the opportunity to show solidarity with workers and all the people in this region. The ethnic conflict in the region is having a devastating impact on lives, property, businesses, jobs, schooling, health care and social and religious activities, particularly in the Bawku District. We in Organised Labour believe that conflict and instability anywhere in the country pose a serious threat to lives and development everywhere in the country. The second reason for choosing the Upper East Region for the national parade is that we wanted to create an opportunity and a unique platform for H.E The President of the Republic to address the Chiefs and people of this region directly”. He reveals Mr. Baah and Organized Labour said they hope, that by appealing to the warring factions directly from here to complement all the efforts the government has been making towards the resolution of the conflict in Bawku, there will be peace. When that happens, it will be a modest contribution from Organized Labour towards peace and stability in the Upper East region. He said “On this special occasion, we are appealing to you, Mr. President, and your government to intensify the efforts you are making towards the resolution of the conflict. We pray for God’s wisdom for you to help resolve this conflict during your term in office, just as you helped to resolve the conflict in Dagbon. This will be a great legacy indeed”. Meanwhile, responding to the Organized Labour’s calls for President Akufo-Addo to use his office in making sure peace returns to Bawku just as he did in Dagbon, President assured the general public that there is no higher priority for the Government on the agenda of national security than the resolution of the Bawku conflict. Not only are we enhancing, as we speak, the security deployment in the area to promote more strongly the rule of law, and hold accountable all who violate law and order in the area, we are also intensifying the efforts to find a solution to the customary tensions that underline the Bawku conflict, so that, hopefully, a final resolution of that conflict can be attained, just as it has been attained in Dagbon. Nothing will give me greater pleasure, in the concluding days of my presidency, than to help bring lasting peace to Bawku. “May God grant me the wisdom to achieve that outcome”. He prayed Source: Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana For publication please kindly contact us on 0256336062 or Email apexnewsgh@gmail.com
You will not be short-changed by government in protecting your pensions– Akufo-Addo told workers
President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given massive assurance to the organized labour that the pension funds of its members are safe as the government continues its Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). Apexnewsgh.com report The President gave the assurance at the 2023 International Labour Day parade. According to him, the government is aware of the impact of the Programme on workers and as such aimed to explore other beneficial options within debt sustainability limits, especially with the collaboration of Organized Labour and government. “I urged Organized Labour to continue to work with the rest of the tripartite body to conclude negotiation for public sector salaries and the minimum wage for the 2024 financial year as soon as possible”. President further said, “In undertaking the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, we have been very mindful of its potential impact on the pension funds of workers. We will not act in any way to short-change workers in protecting their pensions.” “In this regard, within global risk management practice, the options should include diversifying the portfolio of pension funds from the current 70% in government paper to real sector investments including rail, housing, urban transportation, motorways, and airport as is done by other pension funds.” The Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah who also spoke at the May Day parade, used the medium to caution government not to go against its promise to not include pensioners in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme. “Mr. President please, do not touch our pension funds…Protecting pensions is our responsibility and we take it very seriously, to us, our first responsibility now is to continue to protect our pension funds from the domestic debt exchange programme.” “I wish to emphasize that participation in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, voluntary as it was, was critical for the protection of the economy, and the enhancement of our capacity to service our public debts effectively and create fiscal space for our growth and development,” the president said. “In the midst of the current economic crisis, we cannot risk defaulting in the payment of our public debts, which would attract severe consequences – hence the debt exchange programme,” he stated He appealed to all Ghanaians, including Organized Labour to continue with the good relationship that exists between them and the government, stressing that the peace they both enjoy should not be taken for granted. “People who are engaged in illegal mining are worse than arm robbers”—Sammy Gyamfi
National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sammy Gyamfi has said, people who are engaged in illegal mining are worse than arm robbers, because what they do is to satisfy their greed and selfishness. Apexnewsgh.com reports Mr. Gyamfi, made the pronouncement on the TV3 morning programme monitored by Apexnewsgh.com on Friday, April 28, 2023, when discussing Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng’s controversial reports “People who are engaged in illegal mining are worse than arm robbers, because what they do is to satisfy their greed and selfishness. They destroy water bodies we rely on for our very sustenance. You know water is life, so if destroy our waters bodies, our forest reserve just to satisfy your insensible greed and self-interest like these appointees have shamelessly done, you are a murderer, you are a criminal and you deserve to be defended”. He said According to Mr. Gyamfi, the report also captured that party functionaries and the Chinese were all in the forest reserve destroying water bodies without no mercy for Ghanaians “Frimpong Boateng’s report also talked about the fact that right from the National executive level of the NPP to the Unit Committee level, Regional Executives they all engage in indiscriminate galamsey with the Chinese destroying our water bodies. This is not the gospel according to NDC or Sammy Gyamfi. If the Aligator comes from the water to tell you that the crocodile is dead, you don’t argue it, the man was at the helm of affairs in charge of the fight and this is his verdict”. Meanwhile, the report also said, a Member of Parliament Hon. Albert Joseph Quarm obtained a lot of mining concessions which he sold to whooping( Ghc 2 billion) Two Billion old Ghana Cedis. I will be glad if they go to court. Because Prof. Frimpong Boateng anytime he is challenged forcefully has come out with better particulars with even more evidence to substantiate the claims he made in the report. “Prof. Frimpong Boateng report is the obituary of Nana Addo’s fraudulent fight against galamsey”—Sammy Gyamfi
National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sammy Gyamfi has described Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s report as the obituary of Nana Addo’s fraudulent fight against Galamsey. Apexnewsgh report According to Mr. Gyamfi, the report by Prof. Boateng settled the issue or not whether President Akufo- Addo is committed to the fight against Galamsey once and for all. “Any reasonable objective-minded persons who read that report authored by a well-trained Cardiothoracic surgeon, former Minister for Environment, science and technology, and Chairman for the inter-ministerial committee against illegal mining, will come to the inevitable conclusion that Nana Addo proclaimed fight against galamsey was a sham. It was a scam, it was a chared and the real intention as some of us have always maintained is that, he just wanted to kick out legal Ghanaian small-scale miners from the mining industry and help his government and party functionaries to take over the illicit galamsey menace with their Chinese and other foreign collaborators and nothing more. And that is what the Frimpong Boateng report shows”. He stressed This he said, is the reason some of the people implicated in the reports are fighting so hard to discredit the astute Prof. Boateng “That is why our brothers are jumping over themselves very desperately to discredit the report, discredit Prof. Frimpong Boateng and that is why they are insulting him and calling him names. Of course, Hon. Titus Glover has not done that, he sounded a bit patriotic on the matter calling for investigations indicating that the evidence is strong enough for investigation and that is commendable. But if you listen to the other surrogates of the NPP and spokespersons, clearly you can see that they are not comfortable to that fact that Frimpong Boateng report has exposed the duplicity, the hypocrisy, the dishonesty of President Akufo-Addo”. Mr. Gyamfi said Mr. Gyamfi further stated, that despite banning Small Scale Mining for One year and Three months, burning excavators belonging to legal Ghanaian Small Scale Miners, and killing some in the process all in the name of fighting galamsey, President Akufo-Addo ended up making galamsey a free for all enterprise to his party members and government officials. “Prof. Frimpong Boateng in this report said, after President Akufo-Addo banned Small Scale Mining for One year and Three months, burned excavators belonging to legal Ghanaian Small Scale Miners, and killed some in the process all in the name of fighting galamsey, President Akufo-Addo ended up making galamsey a free for all enterprise to his party members and government officials. Frimpong Boateng’s report says the Jubilee House is the head Quarters of Galamsey in Ghana. That some Presidential staffers like Charles Tegoe, the personal assistant to the Chief of Staff, to the director of operations at the Presidency Lord Commey all actively involved in the galamsey and the man just didn’t talk, he provided further and better particulars to support that claim. I am happy that Titus Glover did not try to defend those people because those people have to be defended”.
